Having seen the posting about the Good Times virus, it occurs to me that the
computer world of SR has one major difference from the "real" world.
Downloading seems to be generally focused upon text and information rather
than compiled programs. While I do read a lot of information, it is the
compilesd programs that gives me my wories about viruses. Shadowrun has no
such setup. so what I want to know is:
Should should there be rules about sending viruses (or programs containing
them) between systems without decking (or are frames enough)?
- OR -
Is it not worth the nightmare GM wise?
What are your thoughts?
Here's mine. It seems to me that deckers have always been an awkward part of
the game. They are necessary in a world filled with computers, but they
almost HAVE to work without the bulk of the party. I'm not sure how most
groups handle this, but we usually have the players get a decker "buddy" and
just work them as an NPC to allow the players to participate in the module
more fully.
In addition, the issue of what kinds of income a decker should have is
another problem. Who else is able to download the equivalent of cash?
Lastly, it almost seems like the world of a decker is incomplete, we know
little of the matrix beyond what is needed to open a maglock via computer,
or steal a set of files. I'd like it see a little more time spent on
rounding out this brave new world.
