Welcome back, Steve!

If we see Ivy K Ryan return, _then_ I'll know it's the End Times :P.

Nah, you're not one of the Four :) (Although, come to think of it, since
that prediction was made WAY back when, we've had posts by three of
them...)

Welcome back :)

And god help us all if Topcat ever posts another manifesto ;)

So, you gotta tell you last evil GM plan to destroy your players' sanity.

The amazing thing is that, after almost ten years, we're still talking
about her.

*looks at watch* 28 February... Mentioning "ten years" just reminded me
that (unless I'm mistaken) it must be ten years, give or take a day,
perhaps two, since I subscribed to this list...

Wow. That means I'll be celebrating my 10 year anniversary in about 6
months (or did I join in the summer of 95...).

What's scary is that a few years ago, she sent a letter in to the Knights
of the Dinner table bitching about the way the "boys" treat Sara in the
comic. WHich of course is a bit of a social commentary on gaming in
general, but she missed the point completely and caused a huge uproar in
their letters section for several issues.

Which leads me to wonder if she, you know, is just that much of a porblem
causer, or if she does it on purpose.

Oddly enough, the LOTR trilogy made me desperate for some good old
fashioned cybered elves and spell-slinging dwarves, with the odd ork
philosopher/decker. I have been reliving the entire history of
RPG's, from the day good old Gary Gygax decided to rip off J.R.R.
Tolkein with a hack job fantasy game, to a present where gamers
demand that stereotypes be broken and the line between game mechanics
and realism be as blurry as the creators can possibly manage. In
three very short years, I have watched the RPG community experience a
whole influx of new players, as captivated by the movies as I was by
the books. Inevitably, they gravitate to fantasy, craving dexterous
elves, mysterious rangers, or powerful wizards. They want combat and
nifty magic. They want to slay monsters on paper, as the ultimate
escape from the hun-drum of life. I have been forced to turn down
players from my regular Saturday evening game because we don't have
physical space for any more. LOTR brought a love for escapist,
cerebral pastimes back into the mainstream. People are reading books
and seeking for a place to jump into books again. First person
shooter??? No. First person vicarious thrill ride via the help of a
good GM (DM, Storyguide, Narator, etc). I don't know what the long
term effects will be, but I believe that the LOTR movies may bring
about a revived interest in fantasy. Inevitably, that interest will
branch out into other fantastic genres, and Shadowrun stands poised
as the perfect compromise between Tolkein and the sci-fi (Episode III
could still redeem Lucas ;> ) oriented neophyte gamer.

Another movie I saw about a year ago that gave me some neat SR ideas
was called "Equilibrium". It has some interesting ideas for an
adept, as well as some great inspiration for a religious/corporate
arcology. Some of my players will soon encounter something just like
the civilization described in the movie. They will likely hate it,
and me. The Evil GM in me recommends this movie if only for cruel
ideas to spring on your players.

Not really an answer to your question, but I watched Shaft the other day
and felt it actually showed a pretty good example of a shadowrun: John
Shaft gets hired to find a kidnap victim; does fairly extensive legwork;
finds out Mr. Johnson didn't tell him the whole truth and nothing but the
truth; meets with the bad guys in order to accomplish the run anyway; and
then finally stages a rescue attempt in the way a shadowrun team might.

Yeah. Definitely an interesting movie.

One of my players has seen it and immediately wanted the spring loaded clip loaders from
the final fight scene. Would probably make loading clip a free action as opposed to
simple, especially if they were cyber loaders. Haven't given them over though, yet. They
also wanna learn gun-fu.

A made-for-tv movie that I caught a part of yesterday, seemed like a Shadowrun gone wrong.
"Perfect Assassins" or something like that. I only caught the first 20 minutes
of it though, so I'm not sure where that one ended up. Anyone else seen/heard of that one?

A couple of weeks ago I checked out a copy of the first six episodes of
Cowboy Beebop from the local library. It's *very* Shadowrunny. It also
gave me a strong desire to add some nightclub jazz to my music library to
use as background music for RPG combat encounters. I highly recommend it to
everyone.

And, for the Americans (and anyone else who gets Cartoon Network), you can
check it out on Adult Swim (the late night cartoons). Some episodes are
more Shadowrunny than others, but it's definately entertaining, and
combines the music with the animation very well, using music that isn't
all the usual anime stuff.

Technically not a movie... I just got a budget-pack copy of the original
_Diablo_ and started playing through as a Rogue, completely eschewing bows
in favour of the Magic attribute. Blazing away at bad guys with spells with
one hand while swinging away with a sword (weapon focus) in the other -
perfect image of a Shadowrun sorcerer. :-D
Gawd, I wish I could find a gaming group. :-(

This show made me think "frag Shadowrun, I wanna play Cowboy Bebop!" :)
