Subject: Essence-free alphaware? Why?

OK, cyberware question. I think I debated this a long, long time ago,
but now I'm beginning to reconsider my position...

Certain accessories, like protective covers and those signal boosters,
have no Essence cost. However, if the base ‘ware (a cybereye or limb)
were made into alphaware, the accessory would also be made in
alphaware, with no added benefit. My question is, do Essence-free
accessories have to be made into alpha if the base ware is also
alphaware?

My reasoning before was that even if the accessory had no essence
cost, you'd still have to pay alpha/beta/delta grades for it. Now I'm
not so sure.

Plugging your generic grade accessory into your alpha+ grade cyberpart is
like sticking a vinyl record in your laser disc player ... they just
aren't compatable. The advantage to buying the matching grade accessory
is that it is compatable and actually works with the cyberpart. :P

Note: Protective covers are the exception ... they are not true cyber
acessories and thus are exempt from the above. It does not make sense to
force some accessories, such as non-retractable spurs in a <insert grade>
cyberarm, to match, but for most cases the argument holds water. :)

Also, note that higher grades yield better quality construction, hence
the more dice to resist damage (See Street Samurai Catalog page XX and
Cybertechnology page XX).
