Yeah, but remember that Essence is a lot about your aura too. You change
your aura from the natural state (an aura minus an arm is still a natural
aura), to an unnatural state (such as a cyberarm) and you are going to lose
Essence.

What causes a person to lose essence? Just cyber?

What happens if I cut a guy's arm off?

Okay, now suppose I put a cyberlimb back on it?

Cloned limb?

Cloned limb from someone else's DNA?

Does it make a difference if the guy is a magician? If so, why?

Essence is lost when invasive surgery is done.

Cutting the guy's arm off IMO would not mean a loss of essence, nothing is
being put into the body, therefore it is not invasive.

I'm sure if I'm wrong somebody can correct me, I don't have the Shadowtech
book at my disposal right now.

That's about it. Deadly wounds can cause Magic loss though.

>What happens if I cut a guy's arm off?

He bleeds and you go to jail for attempted murder? Seriously, not much I
don't think.

>Okay, now suppose I put a cyberlimb back on it?

You lose Essence according to the Essence cost of the limb being attached.

>Cloned limb?

Not a problem. Only way for magicians to get their arm back without losing
Magic. Damn expensive and time consuming though.

>Cloned limb from someone else's DNA?

I seem to recall something from the core rules about this basic thing.
Someone else's cloned arm doesn't mean jack to you, it's still a grafted
arm. Isn't there Essence lose for this?

>Does it make a difference if the guy is a magician? If so, why?

It does differ, because of the Magic attribute.

IMO should count against the body index not essence. But either could
and would affect your magic rating. Better do without and/or have one
made from your own DNA...

The Essence Drain power does too. Also, bioware implanted in a magician
causes Essence loss if you follow the rules in Shadowtech. Drug use can as
well, andpoorly-executed cyber-surgery can cause additional Essence loss
over that caused by the cyberware being implanted.

> What happens if I cut a guy's arm off?

Then he has only three limbs left, presuming he was complete before you
got sword-happy.

> Okay, now suppose I put a cyberlimb back on it?

Then he loses 1 point of Essence.

> Cloned limb?

Essence stays what it was.

> Cloned limb from someone else's DNA?

Same, assuming the limb is compatible.

> Does it make a difference if the guy is a magician? If so, why?

No. The only thing magicians need to look out for is Magic loss --
transplanting a limb causes a Deadly wound, so a check must be rolled.
However, no Essence is lost if the check is failed, "only" a point off the
Magic Attribute.

This question is in the books somewhere, but I can't find it for the
life of me. Please, settle a disagreement between myself and one of my
players. Does essence loss from cyberware implantation regenerate if
the cyber is removed? I maintain that when cyber is implanted, a "hole"
is left in the person's essence, which can be filled with other cyber,
but not refilled with essence. Am I right?

You are correct, sir--partially. I believe Man and Machine clarifies that,
saying that that hole cannot be filled in, even by cyber, unless you have a
really nice GM or you take a specific option during the removal surgery (or
implantation of the new cyber, or something along those lines). In any
event, your player is dead wrong; Essence doesn't just magically return.

The FASA ruling is that essence that is lost is gone forever. If you really
wanted I imagine a good health spell could go some way to regenerating back
some of that life force. There is also some rules in NERPS Shadowlore (an
on line book, there are thousands of sites with a copy on) covering the
recovery of essence that I like the look of.

By the SR2 rules every lost piece of essence leaves a "hole" (I think). By
MM that is only a possibility if the doc gets it right.
