Well, in our campaign, I've instituted a set of Sanity Damage
rules that operate much like a Physical or Mental damage track-- ten
blocks and when the tenth is filled, you're kaputt. Then I defined
Essence as the measure of your ability to heal that Sanity Damage-- if
you have, say, and ESN of 6 then you have six dice to roll for healing
damage. If you have 0 ESN you'll never recover and will quickly find
yourself an NPC on the local Most Wanted list.
'Course, this hasn't stopped my players (the ones who go for
Street-Sam stuff, anyway) from dipping as low in Essence as they used
to, because they don't think I'll actually drive anyone over the brink.
But I'll show them.... :)
