Street Sam Catalogue, Shadowtech, Hmmmm.... Grimoire....
Add to that VRII if you're running a decker and RBB2 (in a little while) if
you're playing a Rigger....

Big Black, VR2, Grimmy2, Street Samurai Catalog, and <Insert Location Book
Here>

Reasonings:

Big Black: Well duh.
Vr2: Nessesary if you want to run a decker, and makes it easier to run NPC
deckers. Plus keeping up with the Shadowrun SOTA is good :)
Grimmy2: Magic Magic Magic. Initiates, magical groups, and some really
nice colour plates.
Street Sammy Catalog: Some fun toys, and better suited to a beginning
campaign than the stuff in Fields of Fire, basically. (IMO)
Fields of Fire is a better book for reading, but most of the stuff never
makes it into my games.
Chosen Location: Mine is Seattle Sourcebook. I think it's the finest book
FASA has put together for Shadowrun, that I've read. Unless you're Really
imaginative, I think you pretty much need a location book, at least to
start with. I know people that say different, but I like to have something
to fall back on when my guys say "We're going to the nearest bar, what's it
called?"

I'm really sleepy. And it's 12:53. *Sigh*

My 5: BBB,Grimmy2,FoF,Shadowtech,and NAGRL

Reason for Fof instead of SSC: Most of the stuff in Street Sam is
either: a)in the back of the BBB or b)in the FoF lists. Yes the FoF stuff is
advanced, but the tables of weapon/combat gear are a great resource. And the
Savalette is in the FoF. Of the rulebooks out there, the only two I don't own
are the RBB (can't find one plus RBB2 is out soon) and the Street Sam Catalogue
as the SSC seems so pointless with the important info elsewhere.

The others are self-expl. except Neo-A's Guide. I picked this for
the flavour of the world that comes through as well as fun ideas that it
contains.

I'd say the main five are:

BBB - core rules

Grimmy - initiates, free spirits, spell design and more magic.

SSC - granted the gear is listed elsewhere, but those lists don't give
you details, special rules, alpha/beta grade cyberware, or cyber
repair.

Shadowtech - bioware, drugs, CCD's and legalities.

VR 2.0 - revision on decking rules. (Personally, our games don't do
alot with decking, and up until recently I never had a decker PC in
the group. I myself am concocting my own quick and dirty methods for
handling decking and the matrix, but for another GM/Player I'd
probably list this as the 5th essential book.)

OK, so core rules, Magician Handbook, Sammy Handbook, Non Magic Handbook and
Decker handbook

what would people suggest as the next 5?

Also, is a complete list of all source books published available anywhere?

And which books suck?

I(t just so happens that someone JUST posted a complete shadowrun product
list on another list I'm on organised by Bull...

Unfortunately, I deleted it, and Bull is gone <sniff>.
Someone else still here might have it....

Also over on http://shadowrun.miningco.com , in the Previous Features
section, there's a three part column about what a starting group needs or
might want in term of sourcebooks or campaign material. I think it's a
pretty good resource, but then again, I wrote it.

Bull posted that one up. And since I'm a glutton for punishment - as if I
don't get enough e-mail as it is - where's the FAQ and subscription info for
that list?

email: majordomo@****.net
no subject, body 'subscribe srcreate'
the address to post messages to that list is srcreate@****.net, right now
we're sort of in a lull, working on the Newbies Guide to Shadowrun.

Bull is co-ordinating *snicker* the effort, and since he's away, not so
much is happening right now. I'll probably post the FAQ for that list to
this list sometime before I leave on my vacation.

Well... There was a listing of quite a few of the books in Fro's TSS #1
(Insert Plug Here, Adam :)) along with a write up of them. We're also
(slowly:)) working on a net book called the Newbies Guide to Shadowrunning
which will have a complete listing of every Sourcebook and Module, along
with ISBN number, whether they are still in print, and they will have a
short synopsis and a rating to tell you which ones are the better books...
