Actually, by the powers description, there is a limited number of
creatures that the basilisk can have petrified at once- equal to
essence, I think. I'd also figure, that bieng so, it could voluntarilly
de-petrify a victim. That WOULD make it usefull for hunting- pertify
your prey, let it fall or break itup yourself, then un-petrify it and
eat the dead body.
It would also mean that any corp using basilisk guards, or traps,
is unlikely to keep the statues for more than a few days.
