It also looked like a + (plus sign) when I got the message back, even
though it definitely was a yen sign when I sent the original out.
Something strange is happening here, because I do get (nu)yen signs in
other peoples' messages displayed correctly.

Some terminal emulators are set to receive only 7 bits...
(ASCII codes only go up to 127)....

Hmmmm.... Gives me an idea....

The nuyen symbol is usually about 158 (on my printer and computer at home
anyway....)

Subtract bit 8 from that, and I think you'll end up with the '+' sign....
(Bit 88 for the non-computer geeks out there.....)

157 in IBM's character set, Microsoft put it under 165, and on a Mac it's
180 (according to my Word 6.0 manual, anyway). I've never used a QL, so
I'll take your word for it that it's 158 there :)

Character 30? I don't think so -- space is 32, and before that are control
characters like tab and line feed, and other stuff that you don't normally
see displayed on your screen directly.
