PART I: INTRODUCTION
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

A. What is ShadowRN?
ShadowRN is a discussion list for the role-playing game called
ShadowRun, which is published by FASA.

Shadowrun takes place in Seattle 61 years in the future.
Cybernetics, Virtual Reality, and biotechnology are available to
the public. Furthermore, Magic exists and is controlled by mages
and shamans, and mythical beings once again roam the land.
Megacorporations, with the power of small nations, rule the
politics and hold the ultimate stranglehold on the underclass.
Surviving in the world of Shadowrun takes as much courage as it
does skill.

And perhaps just a little luck.

**********
B. How do I subscribe to SHADOWRN?
To subscribe, you must send a control message to the listserv at
HEARN.bitnet. To do this, send email with the following parameters:

TO: listserv@*****.bitnet
SUB: <leave blank>
1st line: subscribe shadowrn your-real-name

In a little while you should get email instructing you how to
confirm your subscription request. Simply follow the instructions
and you will soon start getting regular postings.

If you have difficulty with bitnet addresses, you can also use the
internet address, which is LISTSERV@*****.nic.SURFnet.nl

**********
C. How do I post to SHADOWRN?
To post to SHADOWRN, you send your posting via email to
SHADOWRN@*****.BITNET (or SHADOWRN@*****.nic.SURFnet.nl for
internet).

**********
D. How do I unsubscribe to SHADOWRN?
To unsubscribe, you must send a control message to the listserv at
HEARN.bitnet. To do this, send email with the following
parameters:

TO: listserv@*****.bitnet (or LISTSERV@*****.nic.SURFnet.nl)
SUB: <leave blank>
1st line: signoff shadowrn

In a little while you should get email confirming your unsubscription
request.

**********
E. How do I reconfirm my subscription
From time to time while you are subscribed to the lists, you will
get a message from the LISTSERV that requests that you reconfirm
that you still want to be on the list.

If you wish to stay on the list, you need to follow the instructions
in your confirmation request.

If, for whatever reason, you no longer wish to be on the list, you
can simply wait for two weeks and your subscription will timeout
and you will be removed from the list.

**********
F. Other Important LISTSERV Commands.
There are many commands you can give to the listserv in order to change
how your subscription works.

SET listname REPRO (default):
This command will have the listserv include you in the
distribution of any posting you make (ie, you get your own
things back, too).

SET listname ACK:
This is simply an confirmation of the posting you just made.
It is returned to you in email.

SET listname NOMAIL:
If you are going on vacation or something, sending a NOMAIL
command will halt your receiving any postings. This is
helpful if you know that your quota will be exceeded during
Christmas break, for example.

WARNING: If you forget to do this and your quota is exceeded,
this will cause all of the postings to be bounced back to the
list, possibly leading to a loop. The only way to quickly
alleviate this problem is to delete your subscription, so
PLEASE use the NOMAIL command if you are going to be gone
for a while.

SET listname DIGEST:
When this option is set, instead of all of the postings
being delivered separately, they will be delivered in
one mailing at the close of the day (in HEARN's timezone).
This is helpful if the number of mailings become a burden.

SET listname MAIL (default):
This option is invoked to restore active status after sending
a NOMAIL request, and is also used to change from DIGEST
back to getting all postings separately.

HELP:
Sending this command will give you a listing and brief
descriptions of all available commands.

**********
G. Why am I getting deleted from the list for no reason?
99% of the time, the reason you are deleted from the list (by the
listowner) is because for some reason mail is bouncing off of your
account.

Usually this is caused by one of two reasons. Either A) your
account is filled and can't hold any more or B) for some reason your
account is not available (either the machine or your account is down).
When this happens, it causes an error message to be sent back to the
list. The list software attempts to detect error messages and route
them to the listowner. Sometimes, though, the error is not detected by
the listserv software and the error gets reported to the list. This
causes the error message to get sent our to all subscribers, including
the person who is bouncing mail. This leads to a loop that really
messes things up.

Thus, standard procedure when an error message is reported it to delete
the subscription of the person causing the error.

Once the problem has been fixed (you are back on the net or have room),
you are, of course, free to join the list again.

*********
H. Why does the list reject postings from my account?
As part of some security features recently installed, the list
will only accept mailings that come from the same address your
subscription is registered on. This is to prevent non-list
people from flooding the mailboxes of dozens of people.

Because of this, if you attempt to post from another account or
machine, your message will be rejected. Please read the error
message enclosed with your rejection and determine what you must
do to fix it in the future.

*********
I. HELP! Mail from the list has stopped coming, but I'm still subscribed!
Mail has an annoying characteristic in that, while most of the time
it is instantaneous, there are times when it can take up to two
weeks to go from one computer to another that is located ten feet
away (much like snail mail, eh?).

If mail suddenly suddenly stops coming, wait at least 48 hours before
you contact the listowner. Very likely a link is down between you and
the list, and as soon as that link comes back up, you will get
all of the old mailings.

Also note that the listowner won't be able to help at all in terms
of mail not arriving. All he can do is to verify that you are
indeed subscribed, anything beyond that is under the control of
someone else.

how your subscription works.

G. Why am I getting deleted from the list for no reason?
99% of the time, the reason you are deleted from the list (by the

It is currently sent out 3x a month. The reason is that if it isn't, and
you wern't here for the old days, we'll get dailing postings of people
demanding to get off the list or posting "unsubscribe shadowrn" to the
list or basically being buttheads. By posting the first part of the FAQ
often enough, newbies can get the information they need.

There is a reason.

Ah, well, everybody gets the FAQ when they subscribe. They get all the info
then.

Also, I don't think it stops people mailing requests to "CONFIRM SHADOWRN" to
the list, just look down your message list about a dozen messages.

OK, this I have to agree with, but just how many times has it recently changed?
Perhaps it could just be mailed out when it is altered.

Well, these things were posted to the list in other fasions than the FAQ as
well. But yeah, I see the idea.

Or thrice monthly as the case may be :-)

Neither do I really, it's not as if I pay for my account space or anything. I'm
just curious as to the need for it.

The CONFIRM SHADOWRN requests are the result of people not reading the
confirm messages (you do read them, don't you) and are barely mentioned
in the FAQ.

> OK, this I have to agree with, but just how many times has it recently changed?

Part 2 changes fairly freqently, perhaps 2x a month, part 1 is fairly
stagnant.

> Or thrice monthly as the case may be :-)

There are two parts to the FAQ. Part 2 contains the meat of the
information. PArt I has information on how to subscribe, post,
unsubscribe and a few other things. This is the part that is most often
forgotten by people. Before the FAQ was posted frequently, we would get
near-daily messages saying 'Please take me off this list' or 'unsubscribe
shadowrn'. This was far more annoying than a single administrative
posting posted 3x a month (every 10 days). It veryfies that there can be
no excuse for a person not having the information available.

True, but they do not read it. Case in point: I cannot even begin to
estimate the number of bewildered/irate/insulting communiques I receive
from individuals whose subscription was deleted for reasons of bouncing
mail. Moreover, I should go so far as to consider such queries to be,

Furthermore, this is IN SPITE of the fact that the FAQ is distributed

my subscription being delete for no reason?" Permit me to assure the

What makes you think they do not do this when it is mailed out automatically?

Ok, you got me there. BTW, I read all_the FAQ material sent to me when I
subscribed, and all the stuff about confirming and OKing my subscription.

Isn't it part one we all get three times a month though?
Perhaps the subject bar should indicate if a revision has taken place, or the
FAQs only be posted when such a revision has occured. If this was the case, and
people knew that the FAQ had been modified, then they may actually read, and
save, it.

OK, I'll take your word for it then. One FAQ every 10 days is better than 10
"unsunscribe me" messages every 10 days.

Could be that no one reads it when its posted either :-)

Denizens? :-) You think of us that way? :-)
Just a thought, perhaps this fact should be added to the FAQ, it was what
caught me out when I was deleted. Sure, the FAQ says people are usually
deleted for reasons of bouncing mail, but if somebody else suggests some other
reason, as in my case, and the reason seems sound, as in my case, then as far
as the FAQ goes, it well could be correct. Maybe add the bit about if you are
being deleted for puntive reasons you _will_ be warned first in the FAQ. Or
perhaps the message which is sent out to people when they are deleted should
state "....due to bouncing mail...", that way it cannot be misinterpreted.

Well, I have been deleted three times recently and I mailed Doom about the
possibility
of seeing the bounce or error report that the server is sending about me
because I am not exceeding my quota and the mailhost here is buffered by
another department if ours
goes down. If I could see these reports I might be able to track down why I
am getting subscribed.

Granted I have received the standard reply from Doom about the possibility
of quota exception etc. but I know that is not the case and it would be nice
if I didn't have to re-subscribe every week now.

Just my little rant...

Hmmm, on reading through this again it sounds like I am blaiming Doom about
this - I am not. No offense or slight is intended I am just annoyed by the
fact that this is happening to me on a regular basis now.

Is there any way I could see the error logs of the server?

You know, I've had that same problem. I can't do anything about a mail bounce
until I see the bounced message return. And I know quite well that this
computer (gpx) cannot overflow its space, because I have no hard drive quota,
all HD overflow gets poured onto a 50 gigabyte DataVault (oh, yes, I'm sure
that's going to fill up REAL fast), and the mail system is buffered several
times (ie: several other machines run mail for this system).

I'd like to see my mail bounce message. Or at least a reply saying that you
deleted it. Not like it matters anyways, because it was a week ago or so, but
I think this is getting a bit insane.

They do -- this is why our most respected listowners have
arranged so that even if you're stupid enough to delete the FAQ, you'll
get one again later on.

Personally, I read it all the first time (over a year ago), and
now I delete the new ones unless a previous message mentions a change.
Our Fearless Leader _always_ mentions important changes before they're
made -- that's why we haven't overthrown him (oh yeah, there's also
something about him and Doom having complete and total control over who is
subscribed, but I didn't pay much attention to that part of the FAQ. *big

If mail suddenly suddenly stops coming, wait at least 48 hours before
you contact the listowner. Very likely a link is down between you and
the list, and as soon as that link comes back up, you will get
all of the old mailings.

Also note that the listowner won't be able to help at all in terms
of mail not arriving. All he can do is to verify that you are
indeed subscribed, anything beyond that is under the control of
someone else.

As part of some security features, the list will only accept
mailings that come from the same address your subscription
is registered on. This is to prevent non-list people from
flooding the mailboxes of dozens of people.

G. Why am I getting deleted from the list for no reason?
99% of the time, the reason you are deleted from the list (by the

As part of some security features, the list will only accept
mailings that come from the same address your subscription
is registered on. This is to prevent non-list people from
flooding the mailboxes of dozens of people.

As part of some security features, the list will only accept
mailings that come from the same address your subscription
is registered on. This is to prevent non-list people from
flooding the mailboxes of dozens of people.

Because of this, if you attempt to post from another account or
machine, your message will be rejected. Please read the error
message enclosed with your rejection and determine what you must
do to fix it in the future.

*********
I. HELP! Mail from the list has stopped coming, but I'm still subscribed!

As part of some security features, the list will only accept
mailings that come from the same address your subscription
is registered on. This is to prevent non-list people from
flooding the mailboxes of dozens of people.

Because of this, if you attempt to post from another account or
machine, your message will be rejected. Please read the error
message enclosed with your rejection and determine what you must
do to fix it in the future.

*********
I. HELP! Mail from the list has stopped coming, but I'm still subscribed!

If you read the headers, you'll see that it was sent to the entire list.
This is done periodically so that people can't claim they haven't been

It is sent periodically to the ShadowRN list address, mostly just
to make sure that you can get a new copy if you've dumped your old one
and forgotten that you can ask me for it.
Check the headers next time -- it said it was to ShadowRN, not to
you specifically.

You know, it would probably save you _lots_ of time if you just automatically
sent this message out a day or so after you send out the FAQ.... Or you
could stick a line into the end of the FAQ saying that anyone who asks a
question like this is going to be turned over to Doom....

This is helpful if the number of mailings become a burden,
but can make it harder to reply within the thread of a
conversation.

SET listname MAIL (default):
This option is invoked to restore active status after sending
a NOMAIL request, and is also used to change from DIGEST
back to getting all postings separately.

HELP:
Sending this command will give you a listing and brief
descriptions of all available commands, including some
not listed here.

**********

As part of some security features, the list will only accept
mailings that come from the same address your subscription
is registered on. This is to prevent non-list people from
flooding the mailboxes of dozens of people.

Because of this, if you attempt to post from another account or
machine, your message will be rejected. Please read the error
message enclosed with your rejection and determine what you must
do to fix it in the future.

*********
I. HELP! Mail from the list has stopped coming, but I'm still subscribed!

In a little while you should get email confirming your unsubscription
request.

As part of some security features, the list will only accept
mailings that come from the same address your subscription
is registered on. This is to prevent non-list people from
flooding the mailboxes of dozens of people.

Because of this, if you attempt to post from another account or
machine, your message will be rejected. Please read the error
message enclosed with your rejection and determine what you must
do to fix it in the future.
