Out of curiousity, what's everyone favorite race in Shadowrun?

Mine's a toss up between Trolls and Dwarves. I've always liked
dwarven characters not matter what the genre, but Shadowrun's Trolls
are pretty cool :)

Halflings. Definitely halflings. And don't let them tell you any different. There are
halflings in Shadowrun - they're just hiding ;) (see the Companion, 2nd ed for a
picture..)

Most of the time, I prefer humans, but also have a liking for Orks. They
make up a large % of the population, but seem under-represented in all the
games I've seen.

I usually play a dwarf for the favorable overall stats, but I must say
that I typically prefer plain vanilla human. Even in high fantasy
campaigns - I kind of like how they are the underdog and besides they
tend to get some cool stuff. Lets face it a 100% slow down for Karma
pool is a big deal, so meta's loose a lot of appeal on that factor
alone. Gotta love those lucky humans.

Elves, regardless of the game (well, when they're available,
Half-Elves are more interesting to roleplay, racism-wise). However,
roughly half of my characters so far have been humans.

(on a similar note, while from a theoretical standpoint my favorite
game-independent archetype would be the private investigator, I
recently noticed that I've played more medics than anything else)

Humans, most of the time. IMHO, Shadowrun wouldn't loose much if you
removed all the metahuman races. However, I also like orcs and trolls,
for the simple reason that you don't get to play one of them all that
often in other games. SR was the first RPG I saw that had them as
"player races", and I tought that was very cool.

On the other hand, I find dwarves a bit boring, and I dislike elves on
principle (except for this one character I used on a couple of
stories) :).

When creating a character I usually go for either a human or an ork --
often I start out with an ork and then change him into a human because I
need more points ;) In the rest of my group, there are several players who
tend to play only humans and others who go almost exclusively for elves,
plus one who picks an ork about half the time he creates a character.

and I have only played an Elf once. Likewise for Troll
and Ork too.

I like playing dwarves or trolls, truthfully, though I usually play a human.

Most of the time i play humans, no matter the genre, I've had two ork
characters in SR but my first (and favourite) was an Amerind human.
I tend to play characters who are somewhat "Jack of all Trades" - and the
flexibility (and in SR anonimity, playing a face is cool but people tend to
remember an elf with a charisma of eight and the "Good looking and knows
it" edge :-) ) that humans offer makes that easier.
Of course Bast (Shadowgang) started out as a human but with nearly 400,000¥
worth of "Shadowfurry" body mods he's somewhat less human now...

Well, mostly I've played humans, but in my current stable of
characters, I have a dwarf, an elf, and a human. I've never played an
orc or troll in SR.

So far I've made two humans, an elf, and a dwarf for Shadowrun. For some
reason I'm more likely to branch out more in Shadowrun then in D&D. Possibly
it's b/c our regular GM uses the "more metahumans" alternate rule, so
there's no karma penalty for doing so. I still see humans and elves most
often from other players, too.

My D&D characters are usually only human, elf, or half-elf. The pretty
races <g>.

All joking aside :) that brings up an interesting thought...

..and nm. I was going to postulate the cybering of horses for the
Kentucky Derby, but remembered the rule in Shadowrun about cyberware
adversely affecting animals and that's why animals aren't cybered.

But I've seen adventures with cybered up animals...

And based on recent innovations in real life, I have to reconsider SRs rulings on that.
Not sure how I want to rule on it - but if it can be done safely in real life...

IIRC the rule is that cyberware makes animals at the very least
unhappy, and more often than not insane. While some rich person
without morals might do it to create cybered guard animals, cyberware
won't make it's way into something like the Kentucky Derby.

OTOH, you can also put in those behavior adjusters (I forget the name --
see Critters) that will seriously cut down the amount of cyberware you can
put into an animal, but would help you have it win the race...

Or what about animal physads? :)

I've always wanted to play an ork, but so far all my characters have been
human.

Ohh... and there have been a single halfling street samurai played at a
convention where you had to provide your own character. I was so umprepared

No 1 is humans followed by trolls. I don't know why,
but I always seem to choose humans as my characters in
any system.Trolls are also pretty fun to
play, especially if the campaign is lighthearted.
Besides, in shadowrun humans are more powerfull than
the other races, given their large karma pools.

Critters page 6: Cyber-modified animals are as likely to attack their
handler as their intended target. When unleashing such an animal, roll 1D6.
If the result equals or exceeds the animal's Essence, it will turn on its
handler.

But what happen to animals which are not critters used for attacking. For
example the horse with cyberlegs with enhanced quickness. Will it suddenly
become "The Frenzied Horse of Doom"? In fact it is not even released, as the
jockey will be sitting squarely on the horses back!

>OTOH, you can also put in those behavior adjusters (I forget the name --
>see Critters) that will seriously cut down the amount of cyberware you can
>put into an animal, but would help you have it win the race...

The behavoir adjusters are called... "Headware designed to control this
tendency". Thats short and easy!

And it cost 1 Essencs, and lower the critters mental attributes by 1 each.
Hardly worth the price (which isn't given).

>Or what about animal physads? :)

I've allways seen the animals physads as the critters. So the horses answer
to a physad is a Centaur, Pegasus, Unicorn or any other horse based critter.

I've found two articles on Halflings, one in Challenge #71 (1993), and one
in the Danish SAGA magazine. The Danish article was translated to English
and can be found here: http://home4.inet.tele.dk/l-hansen/halflings.html.

Nope but I did write mine (and had it published) before the Challenge
article was published.

IMO my own article was way superior to the Challenge version :-)
