Is there any reason not to change the Subject line to something
relevant, when discussions have drifted a long way from the
original topic?

Why am I the only person that seems to bother doing this?

Do some people have fancy mail programs that follow subject threads,
perhaps?

FANCY? It's MUSH!

I don't know how to change subject lines...I probably would, otherwise
(and it would be off the subject soon...I tend to go off from what I originally
said...)
