First, excuse me for my poor english, but I'm French and so ...

I have two questions :

- What is an otaku ?
- And how the rules have changed in the third edition ? Particularly,
the way to cast a spell

Thanks.

An Otaku is "a child of the matrix". In short it resembles (mark my
words, I said resembles) a shaman in the sense that they experience some
form of awakening. Shamen see their totem in some form or another. The
Otaku goes through the Deep Resonance, I do not know if this is actually
described anywhere. The result of this is that they access the Matrix
without using a deck.

Spell Rules.
The biggest changes is that your magic pool is renamed to a spell pool
and is calculated by (willpower + intelligence + magic)/3, and that you
use your sorcery to cast spells in a rather similar way as you would use
firearms to fire a gun.. Whoops firearms does not exist any more, it is
split into several skills (pistol, smg, shotgun etc.).

Example: Taki the Mage decides to throw a power bolt at a security
guard:
Taki has sorcery 6 and spell pool 5.
Two spell pool dices (dies ??) has been allocated for spell defence.

Taki decides to throw his power bolt at force 5 and at serious damage,
(oh yeah, thats also a difference, you choose the base damage level)
The security guard has body 4. Taki uses his sorcery 6 and 1 dice from
his spell pool for a total of 7 dices. Roll roll.. they come
up: 1,2,2,4,4,6,6. The guard rolls his body vs target 5 (the
force) 3,3,6,6. Taki has two additional successes and the guard goes
down.
Taki uses his willpower 5 and the remaining 2 dices from his spellpool
to resist drain. IIRC the drain is F/2+1 (damage level) for power bolt,
i.e. Taki resists 3s and with 5 successes stages the drain down to
light.

Note: The damage/resist part I'm not _completely_ certain about. We use
another rule but this should be as is in the book.

I personally don't know if there are any source books that describe the
Otaku, but if you read the SR book "Technobabel", it does go some what in to
describing what an Otaku is, and how they function in the matrix. This is
more for information, not stats for the RPG itself.

VR2.0 has some rules for them near the back of the
book. Though there isn't much to go on, so I've never
used them (as much as I love the idea..). Anyone know
if FASA plans on going into more detail with the Otaku
in any books due to come out?

How nice to meet a countryman. :-) I'm actually Norwegian (and 25% French), but I live in
Paris at the moment. You don't know where I can find shops selling role playing games in
Paris, do you?

> - What is an otaku ?

An otaku is someone who knows how to deck without using a cyberdeck. Peter wrote about the
Deep Resonance; I might add that no one really understands how this is possible, except
maybe for the otaku themselves. Rules for creating and playing otaku characters are in the
Virtual Realities 2.0 sourcebook, and I think there are updated rules in Renraku Arcology:
Shutdown as well.

If you look in http://shadowrun.html.com/hlair/ , you will find a more or less complete
list of the changes from 2nd to 3rd edition.

According to Grey, at 13:05 on 11 Apr 00, the word on the street was...

There are SR3 updates in Renraku Arcology: Shutdown, but you don't need to
buy that book to get them -- they're also up for download at Herkimer's
Lair (http://shadowrun.html.com/hlair/).

There is a Matrix book coming out later this year, maybe something will be
in that...

There's this little thing called "The Matrix". FASA's working on it
right now, and it will include updates of the rules from VR2.0 not printed
in SR3, plus new material. That would include rules for Otaku characters.
Non-rules matrix material is getting its own entire book, which is also in
its early stages of production- that could include more detailed stuff about
otaku groups, goals, origins, etc.
