No, the rule was simply that if a number of dice equal to your skill
came up as 1s, you fumbled. It didn't matter which dice rolled the 1s,
as long as you got a number equal to, or exceeding, your skill level,
you messed up.

We modified the fumble rule to cover skill dice only (or attribute dice if
defaulting), I had bought (IIRC) one hundred gross of six siders a little
before I was able to institute a "One colour per pool and one for
everything else" rule - each player getting a number of red dice equal to
their combat pool, a number of black dice equal to their rigging pool, a
number of white dice equal to their sorcery pool...etc and a dozen dice to
roll their skills...etc. Every dice of combat pool you used was therefore a
different dice and you discarded it when used and put your discarded dice
back into your "pot" when dice pools refreshed.
It was therefore easy to see when all of the skill dice had come up ones...

My group takes a slightly more practical approach by having just two
colors of dice on the table: white for the skill/attribute/whatever, and
green for pool dice. The only time this doesn't work 100% well is if
someone rolls the green dice for skill and the white for pool and
doesn't mention this beforehand.

I use a similar approach in that each player has two colors of dice. Their
diceblock and my red & black for pool. That way, there's no mistakes.

(I've found that when they try to tell me they meant the red for skill and
theirs for pool, it's after the roll and because the pool dice rolled well.)

such a device is absolutely unavoidable, I will set it to activate when the
counter reaches 117 and the hero is just putting his plan into operation.

And for those lucky enough to use the SRDiceRoller, each of the rolls
is marked whether it came from the pool. And the pool is reduced by
the dice used -- so no losing track of how many are left in the pool.

Yes, that's what I try to enforce, too, but there's always _someone_ who
will claim to "always roll green dice for skill!" Usually when this
comes up it's not an issue because they're not rolling as many pool dice
as they are skill dice, but it does cause the occasional bit of confusion.
