I've seen this term in a few FASA products and on several webpage gear
lists, and while I think I know what it means, I want to know for
sure.

What is a helical clip?

Most clips for pistols or assault rifles are vertical, with each bullet
stacking on top of the previous one. When the first round is chambered, a
spring at the bottom of the clip pushes the next round up a little bit, so
it can be fed into the chamber next.

On a helical clip, the magazine is a cylinder where the bullets are loaded
in a helical (like DNA) pattern around the inside of the cylinder. The
bullets are still pushed into the chamber by a spring, but from a different
direction. Generally more rounds can be fit into an area that is not that
much bigger than a normal clip, with the downside being it must be placed
outside of the grip. The only ones I've seen are always placed on top.

The one you've most likely seen is the Calico 950 pistol. It was the gun
that the bad guy in the bowler hat used in the Crow movie, and the assault
rifle version was used in later episodes of Seaquest for that futuristic look.

One way to visualize the function of a helictical clip is to consider
the more common "drum" or "snail" clip. Those are basically normal
clips
that are "rolled up" like a paper roll. If you garb the middle of that roll
and pull it out, you can get a long skinny tube that is still a continous
strip. A helictical clip is anologous to this lengthened but slimmer roll,
and is used because it holds as many bullets as a drum, but fits alongside
the barell as opposed to hanging off the bottom in a rather bulky fasion.
I suspect that, like most drums, they would be difficult to load rounds
into in any time sensitive situation; loading a drum often requires winding
the spring back with a special handle, as its stringer than the spring in a
normal clip.
