If the ranges in SR are really intended to be for firefights,
and its not just blind chance that fasa guessed at

Alter the ranges .

try this.
ranges are as the book for simple action snap shots
by using an aim action/free action for cyber you can use the
sights/scope and AIM
by aiming for several rounds you can increase the ranges
by x( 1+aim actions) to a maximum of x4-x5 or gm call by weapon

so aim for 3 rds and extreame 500m is now extreme 2KM!
using a Good (3)sight, thats TN4 !!!

Of course you need to use an AIM action to change target at that
range, so fire is slower, but you're still deadly.

You can use this for handguns as well, or any weapon.

A . 44 magnum with a scope can reliable hit an oildrum sized
target at 1/4 of a MILE (if you can shoot)
and thats only a heavy handgun
Using a high power HMG round like .50 MATCH or . 50 Raufoss
multi-purpose, you are easily able to hit mansized targets at
2km and maybe more.
.300WM or 7.62 Swiss rounds are not in the .50 class but are
high accuracy target rounds that pack a mean punch (especially
when using dual purpose rounds with the steel cores to really
ruin someones day)

Swat and SO19 have been reported to use MP5SD variants on bipods
for close in (under 100m) sniping in urban situations.
with a 147grain SJHP pushing the round subsonic and the internal
silencer catching the muzzle blast the thing is silent.
Its great to scare runners.

carlo falls down, blood spurting from a head wound
then Roj falls as well.
no sound. no one in the crowd even stops.
players remaining panic, put magic pool on defence, go astrial,
dive for cover while death hovers above, out of sight.
then someone panics and starts screaming...

7M SMG
TN4 -2smartII +4 called shot(ignore armour) scope2
Aim and fire on each shot Tn-1= 5's
resist 7D no armour each shot. (taking the sniper rolls 4
successes)
URG
this may seriously ruin your players day.

CHOPPER=)
this is the weather the cuckoo likes
sing along if you know the song.
