My character is comtemplating becoming a Follower of the Path of the
Bard. Unfortunately, I'm confused about the rules. As far as I can tell in
order to become a Bard, my character must join the Order of Ogma. My
confusion lies in the fact that in order to join a magical order, you need
to roll your Magic Attribute against a target number equal to the current
membership of the group. If you fail, you must wait up to 6 months then
try again with a target number equal to half the membership. If you fail
the second test, you cannot join at all. Well, I don't know about any of
you guys out there but I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to roll up
a 400 with 5 dice. To make a long story short, I need advice from some
fellow Followers and the GM's that run them. No munchkins, please. I only
want replies from those who take the Follower-class seriously; those who
roleplay the style and disadvantages as well as the advantages.
As a Bard, my character plans to become a musician, using all the
ShadowBeat rules and everything. Are there any musician-runners out there
or even Bard/musician/runners?
Hope to hear from you,
Christopher Higgins.

Followers....do they still exist in S3? I have looked for them but do not
see them. I see contacts, buddies and friends for life. Do any of these
qualify as SRII followers? If someone has them already should I leave them
or make them buddies?

Followers were removed from SR3. If you don't find them to be a big
headache, you could use the old rules. A friend for life is about the
same, but is obviously more expensive (you get multiple followers). A
buddy is a bit less. You could treat them as a group deal on "good
buddies"; most GM's make followers regularly unavailable anyhow, or you
could just have 10 buddies. That would make them "followers" in they way
a gang leader has followers, or a boss has employees, or a rock star has
fans; they would not be fanatical or constantly available.

According to Ed, at 22:24 on 2 Nov 98, the word on the street was...

I think you should make them friends for life, or buddies if money is
lacking :) They chuckedo ut gangs/tribes and followers in SR3 -- the
followers I can understand (I mean, you'd better have a damn good reason
for having them, and anyway the guidelines for them were so vague that it
was all open to GM interpretation anyway), but gangs were always a good
idea...
