Since all the cool people are asking for campaign advice, I guess I have
to jump on the bandwagon.

I have decided to take that fateful step and actually try to run a game.
I have a pretty good idea of what I want it to be like, but I need a
suggestion or two, but first:

Widow, Phantom, Shadowdancer, and anyone else I know, go play outside
for a few minutes - this way lies spoilers. Resnick, you're probably
okay.

Okay. What I wanted to do was have the team go through several different
runs, brought to them by different Johnsons over a period of time, but
after several of these runs, the group comes to realize that they can
all be traced back to one organization/group/company who is running Evil
Metaplot X (tm) and the runners (unknowingly) have been furthering this
scheme and doing a lot of dirty work for whoever is in charge. They will
then (hopefully) feel that they should try to put it right. My question
is: I need to solve for X - I can come up with the lead-in runs, but I
was looking for a good idea for the Metaplot. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Well, I'd say anything that has been published as a metaplot somewhere in
threats/other books can be nice. Bug city, the dunkelzhan (sp?) murder,
renraku shutdown, or any other can be nice. If you want to be original and
come up with something new, follow the general guideline of:
1) It always have to be someone/thing larger then life (very potent
spirit/AI/Metathingie)
2) It always have to want something very big (the destruction of Tir
Tirangire, control of the matrix)
3) It always has to have a lot of odds and ends. Somethings must seem
directly *against* his plot, but are actually, through a very mind-boggling
twist, to his favour
and finally, 4) It has to fail. If it doesn't, you're playing call of
Cthuluhuluhulululh (sp?), not SR.
You can use the Matrix Virus idea we came up with a few posts back... th one
about the self-infecting vicarcious thingie. Look there, I can't even
remember the name of the post, and I formatted my comp already.

<SNIP> Suggestions

I appreciate the suggestions very much, but please remember that I put
spoiler space in for a reason...

Hmm... not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for, but anyhoo...
these are some of the giant campaigns I have run in the past: (actually I
think all my shadowrun games usually involve some giant behind the scenes
plot)

THE HUNT FOR QUETZALCOATL:
This was abit of a big buildup to it... But anyhow, the general ending
of this one was the PCs trying to find and track down Quetzalcoatl (a
feathered serpent). But involved alot of investigation work, dealings with
dragons and such in exchange for info... was more of one giant adventure
that just ran on for 2 months or so, rather than a bunch of little ones.

CLONING OF CHRIST:
A religious cult started off hiring PCs to kidnap scientists, acquire
technical equipment, etc... eventually they wanted PCs to try and find the
DNA of christ so they could clone him and bring about a second coming. (was
interesting, lots of little runs, extractions, kidnappings, etc... PCs then
had to try and investigate ideas like shroud of turin, holy grail, shards of
the cross, etc... trying to figure out if there was any DNA available)

DNA HUNT: QUEST FOR IMMORTALITY:
A group of corporate leaders wanted to investigate the idea that there
might be immortal elves... hired runners to acquire cutting edge technology,
extract/kidnap scientists, etc... eventually PCs had to kidnap an immortal
elf so they could could try to extract the secret of immortality.

DNA HUNT: GENETIC ENGINEERING:
A corporation hired PCs to acquire tech, scientists and eventually rare
animal specis from around the world... objective was the genetic engineering
of what would be the ultimate guard animal.

MAFIA CAMPAIGN:
In this one, the PCs were working, unknown to them at the start, for the
mob. The objective was to take an entire yakuza family out in an act of
revenge and territorial grab. Was interesting and the PCs got to visit the
world.... eventually taking on the final task of assassinating the head at
his corporate empire in Japan (where the PCs actually all died in the end,
my most bloody campaign)

NIKE CAMPAIGN:
This was my most recent one... was a 43 part campaign that ran on for
almost a year. Started off with certain little runs against companies that
seemingly had no connection (eventually pcs found out the all had greek
government contracts). Anyhow... PCs got to deal with rebel forces in Libya
after this greco-libyan war, etc... etc... The end result of this campaign
was the PCs were helping Nike prepare for the military, economic and social
conquest of greece... yeah sounds abit 'unfathomable' but it was all tied in
nicely with the series of runs and eventually made sense overall.

REBIRTH OF AN EMPIRE:
This one is currently underway with my players... can't elaborate too
much, other than saying that if the PCs are successful in their series of
adventures (currently they are on part 24 of 73) they will be aiding in the
reformation of an egyptian empire, restoring an 'immortal' back to his
original title of Pharaoh.

Anyhow, hopefully something there might be some help, if not might be good
for a chuckle or something,

Augustus`

So, when the runners (or were they cross trainers, and who wouldn't be cross
having to do shadowruns for a living?) were at the start, and were asking
why they are doing all these weird things, did the Johnson say "Just do
it."?
MSG buzz, still going strong. Ack.
