Could you bind a free spirit as an ally (provided you were willing to take
a really long time to make the formula, of course)?

If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yeilding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend.
If you pardon, we will mend.

So good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.

Perhaps... The free spirit in question, IMO, would have to be a free ally
spirit and then the conjurer would:
1) need to aquire the truename of the Spirit.
{Option 1.5) optionally, the conjurer would also need the free ally's
original formula.}
2) incorporate the Truename into a new ally formula. {If option 1.5 is
used, the original formula would have to be incorporated into the new
formula as well}
3) Summon the spirit ...

No.

An ally is a piece of you, hence the reason why you give up one of your magic
points.

Now, your Ally Spirit can go Free. Then you have to kill the little bugger to
get the magic point back.

No, you could not "create" a free spirit as an ally. However, allies CAN
go free, and such spirits can be bound like any other. [If you also were its
creator, you might still be able to perform a ritual of change on it, as well,
and use certain abilities like "telepathic link" that others could not.]

Actually, if you read the section on Homunclus bodies in Grimmy, it's not
neccessary to have a free Ally Bound or to be the original creator to
perform the Ritual of Change ... What you need is the truename ...

Nooooooooooo, please don't let your players do that.. Ally's are
reflections of a portion of the magicians spirit/magic/mind. The
necessary "link" for a spirit to be an ally wouldn't be present unless it
was that magicians original ally gone free, and then, if it's been any
length of time, the 'mindset' of the ally will have become enough 'off' to
prevent the reconnection.

the impossible only during the week,
and miracles performed on an as-needed basis....

Now tell me, what was your problem?

A) I don't have players. I'm homeless.
B) I forgot to mention that they also had the true name of the spirit...
