Per SR3, the mage's astral form will last for a number of hours equal to
their essence before it fades away.

Is there any way to avoid fading away? Can the mage continue existing,
in any way shape or form?

Not by the rules, no.. Death is supposed to mean DEATH.

But that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Perhaps the astrally fading
character strikes a bargain with a hugely powerful spirit, or finds an
exceptionally high-mana power spot which enables him/her to cling to a
ghostly astral life somehow.. It'd certainly add some mystery and magic
to the game, and I don't see why piddly things like rules should get in
the way of that...

If a PC managed to try this, though, I'd almost definitely make him/her an
NPC at that point. Wandering around dead is just a bit much for players
in most campaigns. (Present company excepted, Jett.) >8->

I'd probably let them stay dead...just wondering if there was a
loophole. :) Thanks.

As per the Canon Rules of SR, no, there is not. Though there are TONS of
house rules that exist on the idea. I know that we here often use the rule
that advancement in Initiation increases the time, by 1 hour per grade of
advancement. But I sincerely believe that is a house rule.

Not BTB, but I'm sure many GMs could come up with a way in which magicians
may (try to) stay alive. Becoming ghosts, taking over another body, and so
on. The Possession spell from Awakenings comes to mind, but I can't look
up what exactly it does because I loaned out my book.

Well, the only problem I have with this idea, is the fact that you stay
alive for anytime at all...that leads me to believe that there must be
away, if done before your time is up, to come back. Otherwise, why
would it be done...what's the rational?

The rationale would be the Hand of God effect mentioned
in the Sr Companion. This, added to what happens to Lucero
in the novel "Beyond the Pale" might justify turning the astral
body in a free spirit. I know there are many rules for playing
free spirit PCs available on the internet.
I never thought of it before but if a player lost a magician
character he had grown attached to and in which he had
invested lots of time and effort, I might consider it.
However I'd burn all the karma he owns on the spot
to fuel the transformation and make him a ghost
Force=Magic, same stats as those of his astral self.
His powers would be sorcery, manifest, and initiate
powers if he was one. Perhaps I might even throw in
a free spirit power. But I'd rather read MitS before,
since it seems spirits now have karma.
I hope I helped.

You have actually...but I have never read about the Hand of God
effect...I'll have to look it up tonight. Thanks for the refrence.
