Dumb question...would a gasvent be totaly useless on a sniper rifle?

or just use a shock pad...

Realisticaly, yes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a high powered sniper rifle
is gonna pack a heck of a recoil to it, and having some sort of padding on the
end would be nice.
In game terms, not in the slightest.
