I personally dislike the idea of gating mailing lists to usenet when
there's already a similar group in existance (rec.games.cyber). Compare the
S/N between SHADOWRN and rec.games.cyber, for example, or the robotech list
with alt.tv.robotech.

Sounds like an invitation to chaos to me. Bring it on! :)

HUH????? Sorry Rob, but many of us do not understand this question.
If you could explain what it would entail and such - We would be better able to
give our opinions

This may be a stupid question (I don't know enough about the 'net to know),
but would that mean ShadowRN would no longer be available in email form? The
only way I have of reading newsgroups is by telneting to gopher.msu.edu,
which is very unreliable and doesn't let me post.

I'm just coping with the current volume of traffic.
By deleting some items unread. If the traffic increased
because of the gateway, I'd have to get much more ruthless,
or even unsubscribe.

Nice idea. Our service provider charges nothing for news transfer, but
quite a lot for email. At least for me it would be a cost reduction.

With the (lack of) reliability of newsgroups here, I can't honestly say
it would make much difference to me - assuming that there remained the
mailing list option.

It'd lose control. Right now, we're set up pretty well -- when
somebody subscribes, they receive the FAQ within 24 hours. Sure, we still
get frequently asked questions, but just imagine what it'd be like if
they /didn't/ automagically get the FAQ!
Also, the list would immediately be subject to any two-bit
advertiser, evangelist, or politico who wanted to get the word out on the
"info hi-way."
Unless the news-to-mail is actively /moderated/, I'd strongly
suggest against it.

A gateway would mean both ways...they're popular for some
situations, but they've also caused spam to show up in peoples' private
mailboxes at times.

A lot of people are. *grin*

I'm not too much into this usenet stuff (as you can probably tell from my
next remark), but do you mean completely transferring the list to a
newsgroup, or putting copies of the messages on this list in a newsgroup?
