I have to agree with Rookie here. GC98 was incredibly awesome, and IMO, well
worth the money I spent (I know Rookie probably spent more ;)

As for the Bitch (I'll say it for ya guy :), the tournament went incredibly
well overall, except for the arrangement of the teams and who made it in to
the pre-registration slots.

The RN Team (with one person exception) didn't make it to round two, greatly
because (so I was informed) of Teamwork, which was a major thing for points
scoring. There was one member who didn't find it easy to work with the group
(Tim Kerby, Tim Mathena, Jessica Grota, Gurth (I'm being nice, hate spelling
that name), and Thomas Price) and became in general an overall annoyance who
wandered around, had to go talk with her boyfriend (in another team no less)
and whatnot else.

As for the Tournament Theme, because I was a "Lurker" (thank you Granite for
that privilege), I got to watch about 4 teams in total action, and hear all of
them. Very good overall, and some of it was outright enlightening (word of
advice, never use a Water Elemental to move the water away from the blade of a
boat you are told to keep in Pristine condition by the Johnson).

Anyway, I digressed, the Tournaments for SR and ED were intricately linked,
with Bitrunner (Rodger) having been the writer (withholding comment). Lofwyr
was the catalyst structure for such, and the details are too long for me to
desire to go into. However, the group that won this year won -both-
tournaments, and managed to take that honor, away from last years team winners
(which were present).

There were a few other RNers scattered around the tournament. Mike Paff and
I, who were on last year's Team, made it to the second round. We're not
sure how we made it, our team got caught in a nasty firefight, and the GM
had to cut quite a bit to get us finished before the timeslot ended. I can
only guess that we made it on roleplaying and not getting the job done.

Our team didn't make it to the finals, but myself and one of the
non-listmembers made the Alternate list. I didn't show up to see if I got
in, though, I didn't want to jeopardize my Run Out The Guns! slot on the off
chance someone didn't show. As always, the best part about making the extra
round(s) is that you get to play another night.

Caric, who was the only other person from last year's team who made the con
and wasn't GMing, was on a team that I believe made the second round. I
didn't find out if his team made the finals.

The tournament was sea-based, and used SR2 rules, except for the new
initiative system. We had a lot of fun getting into our characters, but
didn't spend a lot of time achieving objectives. I had the opportunity to
play the "uncouth" flaw, and I played it to the hilt as an Ork Longshoreman.
This is a great roleplaying hook and allows you to be totally crude and
obnoxious, crack disgusting jokes, and remain in character.

Yes, the biggest problem we had was the sixth member of the team, a girl
who got added on at the last minute. She hadn't played for several
years, so was unfamiliar with the rules. She didn't mingle well with us,
and actually spent about half the game walking around the room instead
of being at the table with us. I'm not blaming her for us not making the
next round, but I think if we had had a full list team (we wanted Caric,
but this girl got in first), we would have had a better shot at the
second round. Ah, well. Maybe next year.
