Has anyone here recieved hotel confirmations from the Milwaukee
visitors bureau people? I sent mine in two weeks ago and I haven't
heard anything from them. I need to make plane reservations and I'm
curious if anyone else has heard from them. Thanks.

Man, if you just asked for reservations 2 weeks ago, you're probably going
to be living in an elevator or on the streets or 20 miles from Milwaukee.
Hundreds (thousands?) of people book rooms several months in advance. Now
if you do have a room reserved and just haven't gotten confirmation, then
call the hotel and find out. If not, bring a tent and/or hope for a
cancellation...

Nope, I'm talking about the rooms through the Milwaukee Visitor's
bureau. I tried calling a couple places two weeks ago and they were
all full then. I'm assuming that the visitors bureau reserves a
bunch of rooms for the people who sign up through the hotel form in
the con book, which is what I did. Oh well, we'll see. I should be
able to crash with someone if I can't get a room. I only need about
7 sq. feet of floor space. :)

I sent my housing form in two or three months ago, and got my
confirmations two weeks to a month later (one from the bureau,
and one from the hotel).

Hopefully you will get a room. A lot of the downtown hotels fill up
quickly.

It't not /that/ bad. One can still get hotel rooms relatively close to
the Mecca (try the airport) just by showing up on Wednesday. If you rent a car,
it is a pretty nice deal to be able to swing in from the "outer" hotels
and park in the convenient public parking garage just W of the Mecca. You
will also have the advantage of being able to select a zillion places
to eat (instead of just the few in downtown Milwaukee) and you won't have
to fight 10,000 other gamers in the process.

If you don't have a car or can't afford one, it's not as nice a deal. The
hotels still provide shuttles to and from Mecca, but you're restricted to
/their/ schedule.

The other problem with this arrangement is that if you get sh*t-faced at the
Safehouse, you need to chill out for a while afterwards and sober up before
getting back to your room... :-)

As a Veteran of The Con (been every year since 1990) , I can tell yas
from experience that you can get a room VERY close to Mecca, if yer
willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort. UWM's Tower Hall and Mashuda Hall
Dorms are both within walking distace of Mecca, and they are dirt cheap,
comparatively. The rooms are a bit bigger than the average coffin hotel
<smirk> and only one of the two buildings has A/C, but that close to the
Con, I only ever use my room to pass out after a night at the safehouse
anyway. <smirk>
Hotel Wisconsin is also close and a real deal, but real tough to snag a
room in unless you are early bird or know someone. (Actually, even if you
DO know someone, it might not help, I've only stayed there once...)

BTW: When is the Prereg Deadline?.... I moved recently, and my prereg
book hasn't been forwarded yet.... :-(

It stands for Geneva Convention. Wayyyyy back when,
(some old person help me out) GenCon was started by
T$R in Lake Geneva, WI (Home to T$R until a month or
so ago (see previous posts about WotC buyout)). It
got too large for Lake Geneva after only a few years,
so they moved it to Milwakee (sp).

There have in the past been threats to move it to
Chicago, but that hasn't happened.

The $64k question is what will happen next year...

Actuallym, to clarify, Gen Con is older than TSR... It was a local gaming
event that TSR sort of took over after D&D caught on. GenCon started in
1967, several years before the release of the first basic D&D game...
(Which I actuallky had a copy of, until it was stolen at college...:( )

GenCon moved to Milwaukee when it grew too large to stay at Lake Geneva.
tehy kept the name because by that time it had become a big event. I think
it was early 80's when it moved...:]

I think they'll keep it in Milwaukee. It's a huge convention and it brings
in tons of cash so I don't see anyone wanting to mess with a good thing.
WotC has their West Coast (I think they're out on the west coast)
conventions and they're happy with those, so why not take the Midwest money
too? If they do decide to move it to Chicago (doubtful because prices on
everything pretty close to double if not triple) it won't be that big of a
move. Only a few miles. GenCon'll be around for years to come...

Actually, WOTC's big convention is Origins, held right in my backyard,
Colombus, Ohio... They bought the company that runs it (Andon) and a few
other Cons a few years ago, and stabalozed Origins so that it was in the
same place every year (It used to move around every year and was a pain in
the ass).

I think Origins is close to the second largest Gaming Con Con held
nationally each year...

That's not all that tough.... I've been keeping tabs on the merger, as I
have contacts within both companies, and the FAQ on what will change is
now on TSRs website...
Anybody wants it, send me private mail, I'll 4ward ya a copy....
Basically, Gen Con is here to stay, any changes to ANYTHING TSR did in
the past will be based on evaluation of consumer response to product
lines on a case-by-case basis. Gen Con is profitable, therefore it will
remain largely unchanged. The TSR name, Logo, and most of the creative
teams (basically everyone willing to relocate) will all be the same. WotC
will bring their Customer Service and Marketing Big Brains in, and more
so than ever, WotC/T$R will be the driving force behind most gaming
dollars.

It will be interesting to see what they do when the byout is complete. WoTC
has already announced that it will most likely move TSR to Seattle, but
haven't said anything about GenCon other than they hope to not screw it up.
