Ok, to divert everyone away (sort of) from Flaming, let's talk about one of
our favorite topics: Gen Con :]

I know Granite was working on a list of who was going... But maybe it's
time that list was updated a bit since now some of you who planned to go
may not be, and there may be others to add...

Since I've sort of inherited certain planning jobs from last year, I'm
going to try and do a little coordinating between our group staying at UWM,
and some of the others... So can we add e-mail addies to that gen Con 98
list, Granite?

<shrug> I'm open to ideas here :] But we do need to start organizing and
coordinating... after last year, I definately realize that being
disorganized means missing out on fun (and some migraines :))

Okay, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I am interested, and unless
something strange happens to my workloads, I will have paid vacation time to
match it. What does it take to stay at the UWM? I have heard from others it
is the "funner" and "smarter" choice to make.

First off, keep in mind that this is without any other experience on my
part. As much as I loved GC and everything else last year, if WAS my first
GC.

Anyways, we loved UWM last year. It has a lot of advantages that I could
see, and only one (maybe two) drawback. (God, I sound like a Hotel Rep for
them :))

ADVANTAGES:

Cheap -- $88.00 for a 5 person room.

Spacious -- Individual bed for each of the people the room is assigned too,
and more than enough room for an equal number of sleeping bags. Plus,
there are three seperate bedrooms to each 5-person suite, so if you end up
with members of the opposite sex (Like we did with Dvixen last year), they
can have a seperate room.

Game Space -- Besides the rooms having lots of space, there are also
mezzanines and "rec rooms" that have several tables, chairs, couches, a TV,
and a Microwave. Great place for after hours gaming.

"Extras" available at the desk -- Things like Clocks, Fans, etc. that you
can sign out and put a deposit down on, which you get back at the end of
the weekend.

Bus stop right in front of the hotel -- Cheap and easy transportation to
and from the con.

DISADVANTAGES:

No Air Conditioning -- Not a problem last year, but it could be nasty come
August this year. There are fans available, but that's not as good as AC.
But then, who's gonna be spending all that much time in the rooms?

Not walking distance to con -- I'm lazy, so not a problem, and more ofr
less made up for by easy Bus Access :]

Anyways, that's the way I see it... We will be arranging a room or two at
UWM, and Gen Con 98 should ROCK.

BTW: Dvixen and Lady J. Don;t make me come get you :]

Not a problem. It will wind up being my first as well. It was -MANY- years
ago I was asked/invited to play in one of the games, and I've changed
(better/worse, who knows?) a lot since then.

Ah come on, I did stuff like this in DC. It was TONS of fun with all the
pillow fights that broke out back then... ;)

Oh yeah, the "4 day game sessions" nightmare returns suddenly...

How frequent though? I am assuming it runs on sunday as well? What is the
cost into the CON? Per day? Are there "weekend passes", and if so, how much?

Guys, in case you haven't guessed, I am SERIOUS here!!!

Tho it has been many years since, I am used to summers in both Floriday (St.
Petersburg) and Lifetimes in Arizona (all over).

88 / 5 is .... $17.50 a day (not counting if anyone wants to sleep on the
floor.)

I have a question....How far is GenCon from Florida?? Road Trip...

They are NOT! Those are for fighting and bashing the munchkins with (EWG),
come on, don't you know that by now??? :)

> Bad Karma

I guess I have to ask, I don't know you in any way, but somehow, I think it
all becomes "so what" considering the massive gathering that could potentially
generate from this.

And as for distance from Florida ... let's see ... St. Petersburg to Lafayette
took me 19 hours straight through at about 75ish the whole way (I understand
they dropped the limits through Alabama and Tennessee since two years ago
btw). What is that??? 1400 miles???

Lafayette is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Chicago, Milwaukee (GenCon) is about 2
more beyond that IIRC (merging distances here).

Jon Szeto is in Kentucky, and hasn't answered my question if he wanted to use
us here in Lafayette as a "Lay Over Site" on his way, IF he was going (I count
him as a really good "Net Friend", as I'm sure others do too now :).

Tinner and Bull are northeast to east of Mike (Airwasp) and I.

If we merged things a bit, we could get some really cool rooms aligned up, BUT
I need to know how and to whom I am paying money.

For about $100 american, a room for all nights of the con would be nice. Food
is probably what, another 100 or so? Gas, could be 30 (I can get to Nashville
on one tank of gas for instance). Extra expenses would vary according to the
insanity I let myself fall into...(no comments from the peanut gallery folks).

Completely possible.

Anyone else?

You say that now, but ask anyone what we looked/functioned like the last
night of the tourney after all the sleep deprivation...wasn't pretty.

If you register now it's $50 for all four days, dunno about just the
weekend.

I found an article a few years ago, before I went to my first Gencon, on
how to survive the trip. If anyone is interested in it, I still have it on my
HD. Just e-mail and tell me you want it, or, if there's enough interest,
I'll post it to the list.

BTW: it's nice to see that there's so many people interested in going
to GC this year.
