Hoi Chums/Chumettes,

Ok I remember that quite a while ago a lot of you went to GenCon.
I've got a few questions for you...

1. What is GenCon? (some kind of game convention?)

2. Where is GenCon?

3. How much does admission cost?

4. Was it worth the money?

5. How did you get there? (I'm assuming your all as poor as I am...)

6. If I go how much $$$ should I bring?

Thanks-in-advance-if-you-have-mercy-on-a-poor-runner-that's-down-on-

The largest gathering of unwashed bodies in North America...You could
substitute RPG Convention for unwashed bodies...

Milwaukee, WI

$45-$55 depending on when you pick up your tickets..And that is for
the whole 4 days..

Without a doubt..

I flew..and boy were my arms tired..Sorry I couldn't resist..I
flew..Bought my tickets WAY in advance and only paid $166 for round
trip..

> 6. If I go how much $$$ should I bring?

Well food is expensive..and the dealers room is huge..plus you have a
hotel or dorm [that cost varies greatly]..At least $200 spending
money..on top of everything else..Start saving NOW!

I took a bus... Bought the ticket less than a week before the con because
someone else backed out at the last minute who was driving, and it cost me
around $100.00. But it was an annoying 12 hour bus ride tehre and back...:/

Altogether I spent around $500.00, including the hotel, the bus, the con,
and food...

But it was very much well worth it... I just plan to have a little more
money next year so I can actually do a little more shopping...

However, it's a great place to pick up those hard to find items... i
managed to get a copy of A Killing Glare, and saw someone else who snagged
a copy of Universal Brotherhood. Between a half dozen dealers with decent
selections of Used Games, and the Auction Room (WHich I never did find)
it's a great place to pick up game books cheap...

The largest gaming convention in the U.S. I'm not sure, but possibly
the largest globally as well. Sponsored by TSR (and thus now WOTC).

> 2. Where is GenCon?

Milwaukee, WI

> 3. How much does admission cost?

I paid $40 for the full four days. I believe it goes up to $50 or $55
at the door, and drops down to $40 for early bird registration. Event
tickets for tournaments and other games usually run $2 a piece.

> 4. Was it worth the money?

Absotively..Posolutely. I am so glad I went. :o)

> 5. How did you get there? (I'm assuming your all as poor as I am...)

I flew. Round-trip from AZ cost me $185 as Caric was able to order our
tickets well in advance.

> 6. If I go how much $$$ should I bring?

Food, cabs and a room and Sandberg Hall took a bite out of my $$$
(about $200). I was there Thursday a.m. - Sunday p.m. Luckily I was
able to split room costs with Bull, Caric and Dvixen. We also ran into
a another guy name Steve that was staying at Sandberg and were able to
bum q number of rides off of him. (Hey Bull, what ever happend to the
other three that were supposed to share our room and never showed?)

With the Dealer's hall and everything else going on I'd recommend some
spending cash as well (I went through another $200 on the SRTCG,
T-shirts, drinks at the Safe House and other misc.)

Well traditionaly its been in Milwalkee Wisconsin and will be there in
1998 but because of the TSR byeout all bets are off for 1999.

depends on when you register. 40-55 dollars US.

YEP!

Since i live just 3 hours a way I drove up with a vanload of friends.

(current bank balence + expected earnings till GenCon) - (minimum ammount
needed to sustain life till GenCon) is a good base. you might want to get
a few loans for the extra goodies:).

More seriously you will spend about $75 on admission and game fees
+ $100 on food + $70-250 on a room depending on location and group rates
ect. + travel expenses + as much as your pocket can bare for the dealers
room:) = $250+

I kept buying Shadowrun cards to get the little free pin thingies.

That's worse than buy 'em just to open the packs. I know a lot of people
who did that with Magic Cards.

Well, if you hadn't spent so much money on that silly card game, you
would've had plenty of money!
</Mother>

Seriously, make travel plans now. Go to a travel agent and find out
about reserving a room at the hotel/motel of your choice NOW, since it
can only be cheaper than waiting. Regardless of how you get there. Most
will require a credit card to reserve the room though. I can guarantee
you that independent reps and the big companies already have rooms
reserved for next year.

That's what interests me. Getting all the goodies that I've missed over
the years, such as the rare possibility of picking up a few Marvel
books(the ULTIMATE expression of the beer-&-pretzels RPG).

it also has a ton of sci-fi, comic, and anime stuff.

How much do you want to spend? You have hotel, food, drinking, and of
course, shopping. The more you bring, the more you're likely to spend.
GenCon is a working vacation for me, so I usually bring more than others,
but I had a friend who was broke during GC 96, and did the whole con on $40.

Ya know if a few of us are heading out from the same general area, we might
want to look into Southwest airlines.

I'm not sure if they still do it, but once upon a time they had a deal where
"Friends Fly Free", basically a buy one get one free deal.
Flying would sure beat driving, and if we can doa a two-for-one deal, it
would be a LOT cheaper too!

I would still Suggest Driving, especially if someone (like Nightlife
mentioned he might be able to do) can get a Van. Makes dragging luggage
tehre MUCH easier, and life is indeed a lot easier with a vehicle. Plus, I
left a bunch of stuff I was going to bring last time because luggage on
Buses (and planes) is a pain in the ass.

I have a STACK of old gaming crap that Id like to take up next time for the
auction...

actually, if you guys are in Ohio, it'd probably cost under $50 for fuel.

Well, I'd sure as hell much rather fly as well, but I'd rather use
the money for other things, if possible. But definitely worth looking
into...

The only thought that bugs me is finding parking. I have a hard enough
time finding parking in New Haven, Connecticut on an average day. Parking
in Milwaukee during GenCon will be a nightmare. If the driving is as fun
as in Boston, though, it'll make up for it(I'm a sadomasochist behind the

That's because it's not Magic:The Addiction, where you have to have
duplicates of every card in existence in order to play, or be incredibly
good, either one. Shadowrun doesn't have enough cards out yet for that to
be a problem.

That's 'caue UWM is a university, not a travel industry business. I'd

Ouch, that stings. I know someone who was driving cross country, had his

Heh. Betcha that was because everyone flew or bussed or trained their

Or way too far to walk, depending on the time of day, and how much you
packed into your schedule. I'm expecting a general feel of a Renaissance
Festival, with air conditioning(PLEASE tell me there's AC...). That sound

The Auction room is across the road (or skywalk) next to the Arena. I
think
the room is called Juneau Hall, but it's the one right before Bruce Hall

I don't suppose you are too far off on the general feel of
things..And suprisingly enough areas where there was not even a hint
of AC a few years ago were actually livable this year..

It is REALLY expensive, and Australia to Milwaukee is a bit further than

Yup. Sad, but true. Return tickets in the "I'm a poverty-stricken

Hmm, that sounds about right.

Sydney to LA usually runs around 12-1400
and LA to other places is probably 200 each way.

A while back I had asked about prices to and from Australia, no one
responded, now I find there are deals here in town through some local travel
agents (who are nationally connected at least), which could get me to Sydney
for about $900 dollars US.

Also, from what city would you be leaving?

It was two way/round trip. They have the specials once ever two months or so
to Australia (Sydney first time around, then Melbourne I think). And I
believe it would be through either Indianapolis or Chicago actually. The one
I looked into was Chicago. Layovers could be anywhere between I suppose.

The prices still need to be translated into AUS$, which right now is .7222 US$
as the dollars being spent will be Australian, and $1 to an Aussie is the
same as $1 to an American....
