Geraint was a sorcery adept, who had a datajack installed [which
decreased some of his magical talent, a fact remarked upon by Serena),
who possessed enough knowledge in computer programming to perform minor
tasks, and to tag along with Francesca for the major ones. His talents
as a 'street sam' were just that of an average guy who could shoot
relatively well, thanks to a smartlink implant, and a skillwire or two
(which killed even more of his magickal ability) .
Any mage could do the same, they'd just lose as much as he did. Just
because you throw spells doesn't mean you have to be a Luddite, making
hex signs at all things electronic. He was created more as a character
for a novel, and not as a MAX/MIN character. The debate as to the
adaptability/ performance of a magically enhanced person in the Matrix
is still pretty much up in debate, if I read the posting on the list
right.
I sometimes suggest for the mages in my campaigns to have a few
'technical' skills; it is the 21 century after all.

Agreed... I rarely would consider a character in a novel a munchkin
character for two reasons...

A) They are designed as a concept, and rarely worked out on paper. I
doubt there actually is a Geraint Character Sheet sitting around somewhere...

B) How much Karma do these characters possess? We don't know... If the
char has been around enough, he can collect an enormous amount of karma,
and can learn to do just about anything...:]

Oh, right, this is the non-munchy mage with the oodles of money, noble
title, and lots of land holdings, right? And the Decker friend who had 5
upgraded Fairlight Excaliburs?

(I agree about mages having technical skills....I myself play a shaman with
computer and Electronics, but I find the Power-Duo's characters to be a
little over the top)

I have read the aforementioned book three times now [and am in the
middle of a fourth], and NOWHERE does it mention that Francesca has FIVE
Fairlight Excalibers! The person who quoted that was odviously in
errors. And if it is mentioned, and I am wrong, I apologise.
I just didn't want to get into that whole 'all runners must be drek
of the earth, poor, down trodden scum, who'd kill their grandmother for
a lark, no family ties, a loner Lone Wolf who trusts no one, not even
himself, yadda yadda yadda. It's been done to death!
Cyberpunk is supposed to be about expanding on the old themes, and
finding new twists to them. When it starts to become repetitous, the
shine wears off the chrome, and as Michael Moorcock once said in one of
his novels, to paraphrase 'Everything, no matter how avant-garde,
eventually tends to musak'.
It's just a concept for a story, that's all. Something maybe a
lowly runner can aspire to; if he survives long enough.

I'd like to point out that Excaliburs are no where near as valuable as
they cost after VR2.0 came out. It's obscenely outdated. For that kind
of cost I could fly all the options on a MPCP:15 deck,

Brother-1. Decker for hire.

sorry, it's been a while since I read it...the character I'm refering to is
Geraints friend (Micheal?) who shows up for two more books, Nosferatu and
Black Madonna. So YES, it is a friend of Geraints, but NO, it isn't in
Streets of Blood.

I keep my runners busy surviving. :) Agreed though, we don't want to get
into that thread again, since I can never convince you the bleeding obvious
(i.e, that I'm Right.) :-D

They were talking about another one of his friends. Michael I think his
name is. He is a super rich decker. He also only had two, not 5, which I
can quite happily believe, because I think he was rich anyway. He wasn't a
broke runner making his way up from nothing.

Couldn't agree with you more.... just cause the guy (or gal) can toss
spells doesn't mean they have to wander around in a long robe with a
staff, and use ONLY his magic. One of my mages (who incidently may have
turned out to be something of a latent SHAMAN if he had progressed a bit
farther) had the highest Electronics skill in the group. And another
semi-burned -out mage of mine could rival most street-sams in melee
combat (and most mundanes in cyberware).

Really? Maybe it was 5 decks, two of which were Fairlights. I seem to
remember 5 being the obscene number from Black Madonna.....

I haven't read Black Madonna. In the ones I have read, I remember him
having 2 Fairlight's, and I think another 2 upgraded Fuchi-7's or
something. He may have had 5, but I don't think they were all Fairlight's.
