Ah, Guter Doktor, I thought your Germany resembled what little I know of
the Bismark era. However, given your propensity for quoting Herr Frederick
der Grosse, I assumed that you modeled it after his own era as well (and
of Frederick's exploits, I know less of than I am aware of Bismark's). I
was always rather partial to Peter the Great, myself (a Russian, I know,
but yet another autocrat with a title).

Marcel, the ShadowRN freedom of information act dictates that you must at least
give us an overview. We would especially like to know about the History,
Magic Rules, and Cyberware.

Feel free to post them at your convience.

In order to save Marcel some work here, I am reposting some summaries I
happened to save a while back. I don't remember whether they were on
ShadowRN or rec.games.frp.cyber (maybe it was *.misc back then?)
There are two viewpoints here:

Okay everybody, You asked for it, you got it. A summary of *THE GERMANY
SOURCEBOOK*. BTW this was pulled off the rn news reader where it had been
posted by one Achim Held. Kudos to Achim for posting it for us on the
other side of the pond! (Where necessary I have corrected his english).

THE GERMANY SOURCEBOOK: A SUMMARY OF ITS CONTENTS

Die Augen de Riggers (The Eyes of the Rigger)--- a nice short story
playing in Hamburg

Schneller Vorlauf (Fast Forward)--- an overview about geography, weather,
important laws (what weapons/cyberwear is prohibited?), emergency call
vidphone numbers, prices --- you could call it a short travellers guide to
2053's Germany. The currencis in Germany are Nuyen, ECU and --- on the
street - the DM.

Geschichte (history)--- the history of Germany from 1998 to 2053.

Deutschlan 2053: Ein Ueberblick (Germany 2053: An Overview)--- everything
about political and social aspects of the ADL, how Germany is called since
2045 (Assoziierte Deutsche Laender, could be translated as associated
German countries, but I think countries isn't quite the correct word here).

Berlin: Studie in Anarchie (Berlin: A Lesson in Anarchy):--- a long
chapter about the history and political structure of the former capital
(Hanover becomes the new capital in 2022), folowed by information about
gangs, megacons, hotels, bars, etc. Since 2015 Berlin is once again
surrounded by a wall, this time to protect the other parts of Germany from
the anarchy in Berlin. Berlin has no real government, the status is called
status F, which means no laws, and all decisions are made by parties,
policlubs, gangs and megacorps - whoever has the most influence at the
moment; in the next moment everything could change. Life in Belinis for
the hard ones, a run in Berlin is the kind of adventure for someone who
has seen evrything (and who has a BuMoNa contract - the German DocWagon).

Hamburg: Vnedig des Nordens (Hamburg: Venice of the North)--- a big part
of Hamburg's inner city can be forund under water since the North Sea
disaster of 2011. In spite of this, the situation in Hamburg is less
chaotic than in Berlin, hte city has a democratic parliment, and there are
laws. To be mentioned is the prison island Wlihelmsburg, called Big Willi,
Germany's biggest prison, where a riot in 2037 cost nearly 5000 lives.

Der Rhine-Rhur Megaplex (The Rhine-Rhur Megaplex)--- an overview about the
complete region and special information about the more important cities.

Die Suedenstaaten (The Southern States)--- with sections about Bavaria,
Wuerttemburg, Franken, the SOX (the region Saar-Luxembourg, which is
radioactivly contaminated since a disaster in the nuclear power plant
Cattenom), Great Frankfurt and the special area Karlsruhe, which is
controlled by the Bundeswehr, the German Army.

Die Laender der Erwachten (The Countries of The Awakened)--- the areas
that are inhabited by Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, and Orcs, like the Troll
kingdom Schwarzwald.

Der Freistaat Westphalen (The Free State Westphalen)--- the most religious
and conservative of the ADL.

Magie in Deutschland (Magic in Germany)---about the two kind of magic in
Germany: hermetic magic that is taught at universities and natural magic,
performed by so-called wise women (and men) and witches.

Partien und Policlubs (Parties and Policlubs)--- just what the title says.

Wirtschaft (Economy)---a very interesting chapter with information about
the most important corps.

Forshung und Entwicklung (Research and Development)--- a short (two pages)
overview.

ISDN2: Die Matrix (ISDN2: The Matrix)--- info about decking in Germany.

Organisiertes Verbrechen (Organized Crime)--- its everywhere...

The last chapter contains more playing info like new arhetypes (e.g.
subway jockey or city witch), some equipment you can buy in Germany,
and a chapter about paranormal animals ( no desciptions, but reports
about their occurence in Germany.

Anyway, Achim goes on to say that he wonders if any non-German can fully
appreciate the book as ther are some in jokes, but I am undaunted
personally. he also says that it says in the preface that there are plans
to translate it into English *HOORAY*.

There you have it everyone. Comments? Opinions? Lets her some discussion!

Here's another file I have... Remember, I did not write these.

John Fox
johnf@*****.edu

Just got my copy of the Germany Sourcebook today, and it really does look
nice. It's hardcover, for one thing, which means it probably won't start
tearing up like all of my other Shadowrun books.

I'll go ahead and give an overview of the book here, although I just got
it today and haven't had a chance to read it closely.

The book is divided into the following sections:

(1) The Eyes of the Rigger (Die Augen des Riggers)

This is just a cute little short story to start things rolling,
see what kind of things are going down in 2053, etc. Good stuff.

(2) Fast Forward

This section talks about the geography, climate and demographics
of Germany. There's a section (Anreise) on how you get to Germany, by
air, by car, etc. Also explains about arrival in Germany, what you need
to get in, etc. There's a bit about Cyberware, Drugs (legality and stuff),
security levels of the various Matrix RTG's and some important LTG's.
There's a DocWagon equivalent mentioned called BuMoNA, and there's
a standard section on typical prices for hotels, meals, cyberware, and
other sundry goods and items.

(3) History

Haven't gotten a chance to read this yet, so I can't really
say much of anything about it. Looks promising at first glance, though.

(4) Germany : An Overview

Here we get to see the current division of power in Germany,
or the ADL. Sort of explains the current situation and outlines the
various regions that currently exist in the ADL. Some section here about
Autoduellists! Heh. Have to read that more closely.
This overview also talks about Lifestyle, Culture, Living, Eating,
the Media, Music, and so on. There's a brief outline of the ADL's current
state of relations with other countries. Among those mentioned are
Amazonia, Aztlan, the Balkan States, CFR and Slovakia, Damascus-Liga,
France, Italy, Koenigsberg, the Mahgreb States, Austria, Poland, Russia,
Switzerland, Scandinavia, Spain, the UCAS, California Free State, and
a few others. Whew.

(5) Berlin : A Study in Anarchy

Cute opening quote:

"Du meinst, Du bist gut, Chummer? Dann komm doch mal nach
Berlin und zeig, was Du drauf hast."

A good equivalent in English would be:

"So, you think you're good, huh, Chummer? Well, then come to
Berlin, and show us what you've got (or maybe "what you're made of" would
sound better. Anyway, you get the idea.)."

This whole section deals (obviously) with Berlin. Gives us
racial breakdowns, stats on crime rate, other important facts and such.
Tells ya about getting there. The book is really good about following
the structure of the other two Sourcebooks.
There's a section on the history of Berlin, or at least the
last ten years. Stuff about deckers, law and order, the major corporations
that exist in Berlin, such as Saeder-Krupp, Mercedes-Benz, Fuchi Berlin,
the EMC, Aztech, Renraku, and others.
Talks about the various Policlubs, the NAP, ASTA, LSB, and some
others, including our favorite, the Humanis Policlub.
Next we hear about the gangs, who have some amusing names.
Stuff about work, trade, social life, free time, and then a
section on Shadowrunning in Berlin.
Wraps things up with place descriptions (Hot Spots for
Night Life). Hotels, Restaurants, and so on, with comments from
various Shadowrunners, just like other sourcebooks.

(6) Hamburg : Venice of the North

Title says it all. Waterways, gentlemen (and ladies).
Haven't read to find out the details yet. Really need to spend a
few hours curled up with this thing.
The author of the Hamburg section includes a nifty chronological
history starting from 2001.
Structure is similar to the Berlin section. How to get there,
politics, corps, etc.

Oh, damn, I'm amused. I just came across an add for

Die Universelle Bruderschaft.

Heh heh heh. Three guesses how that one translates.

(7) The Rhein-Ruhr Megaplex

Structured similarly. This one gives us security codes for
neighborhoods and stuff. Cute color adds for BuMoNA, Apollo Design, and
some other places.

(8) The Southern States

(9) The Awakened Lands

Looks like the Trolls have set up shop in the Black Forest. Some really
cool stuff here, it looks like.

(10) The Free State of Westphalia

(11) Magic in Germany

Nature spellcasters use idols and not totems for
their magic. Among the "idols" are The Moon (Diana, Artemis), der
Gehoernte, which I think translates as The Horned God. Some others
are the Great Mother, the Wild Hunter, the Creator, and (I think)
the Dragonslayer.
The Idols all give various advantages and disadvantages in the
same way that Totems do for shamans.
There's a section on witches here, too. Interesting stuff.
There's also a little section on various places or sites of magic.
Lots of different things here.

(12) Parties and Policlubs

Lots of different organizations here, folks, and for those
Illuminati fans out there, there's a Bavarian Illuminati Policlub!
A mention of terrorist organizations, among them GreenWar. They're
a pretty important bunch.

(13) Economy

Mostly an outline of major businesses and corporations in the
ADL.

(14) R & D (Research and Development)

Talks about genetic engineering, robotics, cyberdeck interfacing,
and other stuff.

(15) ISDN2 : The Matrix

Description of the Matrix, a history, section on software and
matrix "worms." Looks cool.

(16) Organized Crime

Speaks for itself.

(17) Connections

This is a list of new contacts, the Mage Doctor, the Eco-Guerilla (my
words, still thinking Illuminati, heh), the Autoduellist (I really
need to find out what this is all about), the Magic Professor, MET-2000
Officer, and also some new archetypes.

The archetypes are the City Witch, the Wise Woman, and the Subway-Jockey
(yes, really, the Subway-Jockey).

(18) Equipment

New weaponry, cyberware, etc. REALLY REALLY cool stuff. Especially the
vehicles. They have some MAJOR military and security vehicles listed.
Zeiss Cybereyes at 5 different levels, looks like. There are damage
codes and price costs, etc. but the damage codes are FIRST EDITION.
So are the archetypes.

(19) Awakened Critters

A list of different paranormal animals found in the ADL.

(20) A map of the ADL.

One interesting thing I saw when I glanced at the Germany source book was a
claim to the effect of "Magical Shamanism is mostly of American origin because
it is in their cultural background, there aren't really shamans in Germany
because there never have been any."

Yes, Nightfox, German has no Shamans. It has those Avatar thingies instead.
This confirms that there are three types of Magic in Shadowrun.

1) Hermetic - Which is the same wherever you go.

2) Natural (Uses some type of Mystical Power giver)
a) Shamanism - North America
b) Druidism - The British Isles
c) Avatarism - German, possibly other parts of continental Europe.

3) Munchkin - aka Elven Magic, Ways and Paths

that because I for one am interested in seeing it.

How about taking an atlas and looking up modern-day Germany? Then chop off
a bit of the top to account for the North Sea advancing South a bit in
2002 (or whenever the North Sea Disaster took place), and you're half-way
there already... Or try and contact Germans on this list (addresses ending
with .de :)
