Well, dunno if the book rules contradict this one (don't have them with
me at the moment), but in my game any multi-weapon requires the
appropriate skill for the appropriate weapon being fired (Assault
Rifles, Launch Weapons, Shotguns, etc). There is quite a difference
aiming and firing the assault rifle from the grenade launcher. The
physics and balistics are just so different. That's my interpretation
anyway.

It's already happened in my game that the ex-soldier character was
covering the group's retreat with his souped-up assault rifle, and
realised that a well-placed grenade from the under-barrel launcher would
do the trick. Unfortunately, he didn't have the appropriate skill, so
after skill defaulting and getting some predictably crappy rolls, the
grenade skipped off the building in the background and hammered a few
group members instead. Nothing fatal, but fotsa fun from where I was
sitting ;-)

I make sure to give my character both rifle and grenade
launcher skills.

You'd think he would have thought of that too, huh? ;-) The group was a
bit stressed when it all happened, but we all had a good laugh about it
a few hours later...

Launch Weapons if you have it, otherwise you can
default to Assault Rifles at only a +2 (or +1?).

In the Skills section of SR3, it says:

"Note that if a character has a weapon with an underbarrel grenade
launcher, the player can default to that weapon's skill as if
defaulting to a base skill within the same grouping (+2 modifier to
the target number, 1/2 Combat Pool)."

So the aforementioned grenade launcher on the underbarrel mount of an
assault rifle may be fired with:

* Launch Weapons, at no penalties.
* Assault Rifles, at +2 and 1/2 Combat Pool.
* Gunnery, at +2 and 1/2 Combat Pool.
* Intelligence, at +4 and no Combat Pool.

A grenade launcher uses Launch Weapons skill, though you can default to the
skill for the weapon on which it's mounted at only a +2 modifier and
one-half Combat Pool.
