I think what you really need to do is talk to both your friend and your
GM(arrange to meet/ring him), to find out their styles, and what
holes/niches there are in the team. Once you know that it's just up to
your own personal taste, and what kind of character you want. It's just
that finding out the group style is important if you want to maximise
your own enjoyment.

I'm now running a new Rolemaster campaign, and I learned something verrry
important.
BEFORE starting your new campaign as a gm, talk to each individual player, and
YOU decide what they will play [do make it look like THE PLAYER thought of it,
-as a good GM you must be very good at manipulating people-... [=trade secret,
do not divulge to players].
Then give each of them families and friends, you should have a few adventures
ready to play, so choose people they will meet in those adventures, this will
really jumpstart your campaign into a real roleplaying environment!!
oh, and make sure the first adventures are low power and do not involve combat,
you'd be surprised just how many non-combat ideas can be used for adventures IF
and I do mean IF the characters have a good background which is really used in
the campaign, which is ONLY really feasible if you start your campaign this
way!!!!!!
It is a bit more work for the GM, though. a combat only session is prepared in
about 5 minutes, a roleplaying session.....well let's just say it takes longer..
