In my current group, most of the players have not been playing SR for long
enough to GM it, and about half of the group has only a little RPG
experience at all. The breakdown of the group is something like this:

Three players who've only been roleplaying for up to a few months each; I
doubt they'd make good GMs right now. Curiously, perhaps, is that one of
them is showing a lot of interest in GMing, though he didn't even know
what an RPG was a month ago...

One player who has roleplayed for several years, but I wouldn't trust him
to GM, mainly because of the way he acts and thinks (a bit hard to
explain, this; you'd have to know him to understand what I mean).

One AD&D GM whom I've never seen "in action" as it were, but I intend to
get him to run a game for us someday.

One player with several years of roleplaying experience in general and
about 2 1/2 years of SR in particular; he GMs Mage for our group.

One player with more SR experience than is good for me :)

Every couple of weeks, I get a break because we'll get on with the Mage
adventure, but apart from that I'm more or less stuck being the GM.
Perhaps it's also because (and this isn't intended the way it's going to
come out) I'm probably the best GM in the group. Which is not strange,
since I think I've gotten to actually _play_ SR, as opposed to GM it,
maybe 10 times in the past five years :/

The guy who is interested in GMing wants me to teach him how, and I'm
happy to oblige. One of the things he came up with was that it would give
me a chance to play...

Those kind scare me, almost -too- interested, makes me wonder what they have
in mind and sets off my "paranoia meter".

Actually, I have a very good idea...once had someone very much like this.

Sounds potential.

If he does a good job with Mage (and can handle Paradox with -REAL-
understanding), then he'd be a sure shot for SR.

I actually don't understand the sentence.

I am happy that Mike did what he did, when he did. Things have come a long
way here because of it.

Hey Mike, this sounds familiar doesn't it?

I DM'd my first game after only playing the game twice. Granted the game
was abyssmal, but it was the start of my DM/GM experience that's now
lasted 18 years,
spanning more game systems than I care to mention.

Maybe you're just naturally more paranoid than I am, but I welcome his
interest in this side of roleplaying... Whether he's still interested
after he's tried it remains to be seen, though :)

He still has some things to learn (such as making the world really
believable (as he's on the list and probably reading this, I'll add "No
offense intended, Gabriel :)" :)

I thought so :) Maybe this'll help: including me, there are seven players
in the group, and I already mentioned six of them...

Yes, it does sound very familiar ... give the guy a chance .. you never know
what could happen ...

Probably one of the first things off the bat for the newbie .. tell him to
have fun ... if he goofs up the first couple of times to continue on and
explain the goofs as something weird having happened.

From personal experience, that's probably the best advice any aspiring GM
could get. Also, even though it may put you off, having your first-ever
adventure go horribly wrong is a very good lesson. (It happened to me, and
taught me a lot more about how to deal with players than the next few
attempts did.)
