I've been doing a long winter's intensive review of the critters. It's clear
that the critter listings themselves need a bit of review, as there are
fiddly bits that are missing from some of them. I was ignoring the errors
until I came to Greater Unicorn, which is cut off at the bottom of the page
and not continued on the next. Do any of you know what the Greater Unicorn's
final stats should be? I have Predator and Prey, (no help on G.U.) but my old
Critter books are lost in storage somewhere. And yes, I'm gonna start taking
names of the critters with errors I come across.

My Critters book is on loan to my group's current GM, so I can't give you
only the missing stats, but here's what PAoNA gives for the greater
unicorn:

B Q S C I W E R Attacks
8 4x5 8 4 3/4 4 (6) 5 7M3, +1 Reach
Powers: Empathy, Enhanced Physical Attributes (Quickness), Immunity to
Pathogens, Immunity to Poisons, Magical Resistance, Search

Using the guidelines in the SRII main rules and some SR3-educated
guesswork, the basic stats would update to:

B Q S C I W E R Attacks
8 4x5 8 4 3/4 4 6Z 5 8M, +1 Reach
Initiative: 5+2D6

This is correct according to Critters.

At least it gives you a picture for each critter :)

I must agree. I especially like the size comparisons to the Human (one
of the archetypes, if I'm not mistaken -- but don't have the book on me
right now)

Yup, the Urban Mage (a.k.a. "Uncle Sam"). Speaking of which, I didn't
remember the archetypes from SR1/2 being *that* ridiculous.

The Street Mage, yes. Although you have to be wary of the comparison, as
sometimes it's quite a long way off compared to the size the critter is
said to be by the text...

Yes. Actually, that's probably inspired by the CoC Peterson's Guides. Or
were they doing that for the regular
Critter entries for that game. (so many trivia, so few years)
The exact product was called S. Peterson's Field Guide to Cthulhu Monsters,
and the sillouettes were based on
the old Greandier CoC figs. It was much more expnsively done than any SR
product. It was printed in 1988.

This is relative as a discussion for the derivation of some SR practice, and
possibly as a thread on
a) Critter books

b) history of ideas in the gaming biz.

And it's the season where we need some threads.

BTW, is there ANY point to cateloguing the many errors, typos, etc in
'Critters'?

I didn't know that, but I do realize now that the silhouettes in PANA and
PAoE are not the only thing inspired by the Cthulhu book -- check the top
of page 6 of PANA :)

I would certainly think so...
