At 11:53 PM 28/03/99 , Brian Gambrell annoyed me by writing:

Tsk tsk tsk. Never *NEVER* send attachments to the list. ESPECIALLY if you
are warning about a virus that is spread by launching attachments... I'll
spare the thwap since Spike already got you...

However, the virus warning, amazingly enough in this ... world of 'it's not
for real, it's a damned hoax" ...a *real* virus.

http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/special/melissavirus.html

So far, it only affects users of MS Outlook using MSWord, so, if you use
either of those, I highly recommend visiting the ZDnet as well site for
more information. (And a load of links)

Last I checked there were four variants of the virus, but at least one was
dormant. (A 'bug' in the code that rendered it broke. ;) None of the
variants affect any other mailers.

Most, if not all, of the virus protection software companies have alredy
provided a way to protect yourself from the virus, and it's worth looking
at. Be warned that most of the sites for those companies are pretty loaded,
so it's slow, and you'll have to try hard to get a copy of the fixes. (But,
I think it's owrth it. Decide for yourself.... *grin*)

Quote from CNN article: "Infected documents are sent as attachments to
e-mails most frequently bearing a header: "Subject: Important Message From"
the name of person whose computer relayed the virus. The body of the
message says "Here is that document you asked for ... don't show it to
anyone else ;-"

Again quoted from a CNN Article: "Microsoft has a patch available at
http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/ms99-002.asp "

I've received one of these, but since I had no clue who was sending me a
doc I never asked for, I ignored it. ;) Wouldn't have mattered much since I
don't use Outlook and MS Word. (yay) A friend from work wasn't quite so
lucky. (suxors, esp since he sells copmuters for a living. ;)

So.... With that in mind, check out the sites, be armed with *real* info,
(And NO ATTACHMENTS TO THE LIST!!! *grin* ) And don't accept wooden nickels
unless you asked for it specifically. ;)

Btw, The Matrix is HIGHLY entertaining. :)
