Yes I was just thinking about that last night. I rationalised it by saying
that the aura of a living being extends 6 inches from their physical bosy
and therefore 'envelopes' the foci to some degree causing the spell to
attack both.

My next question was, if two people are holding a foci at the same time,
can you hit both with a single target spell? (Maybe you have to use the
multiple target rules or something).

You can't at all because you need an area-effect spell for grounding
(otherwise you would only attack the focus itself..)

Not true - a grounded spell hits the person that is in possession of
the focus if it is a single-target spell.
