I'm just starting with Shadowrun and I have a few questions on these two
things. What exactly does Hardening do? And why is the Sensors attribute
so important? I think I understand all the other things in the Matrix, but
there wasn't anything in the SR2 sourcebook that seemed to say what
practical application either have. Hardening is supposed to reduce the
amount of damage done by programs, but how? And Sensors says "This
attribute lets the persona detect things in the Matrix" but gives nothing
else...

Decking
Hardening - deduct number of points of hardening from number of
points of damage the IC does (note IC works on boxes NOT stagings
done)

Sensors roll vs program / node ratings i think. They are used to
detect things, workout what things are. I think some things list a
required roll on sensors to find out what they are but i cannot
remember as i virtually never use the rules.

Hardening stops damage which is done to your persona. Example: Damage for
6 points, hardening on your deck is 3. So you receive 3 points of damage
(6-3). Works like the shield program but doesn't degrade.

Sensors: If I remember right you use the sensor rating (indirectly) when
using sensor utitilities. When you're starting a sensor utitility (like
analyze) your make a special execution test, rolling your program-rating
(plus hacking pool) vs. security code of the node you're in. The test is
resisted, so the system rolls his security code vs. your (tada!) sensor
rating. So, better sensors = more information.

Hardening is really simple: if you take 6 boxes of damage, and you've got
Hardening 2, you only take 4 boxes: so, simply substract the Hardening
from the damage done to your decker.

Sensors, well, yeah, I don't know too much about that either... and as
will probably be known here, I actually have strong feelings against
the entire rules for decking... It's just that I haven't found a way
to write replacements that still fit in with the SR2 rules :(
