From "Into the Shadows" right? I think he was something more than your average
wage slave because he was good enough to do real decking and control a
helicoptor (assuming I'm remembering the correct story).

The "Secrets of Power" trillogy.

He was a Renraku wage slave that they decided to "upgrade" with a datajack
to "increase his efficiency". He also flew an ultralight as a hobby, so
could get by giving an Osprey's autopilot some guidance.
