Actually, drain can *never* be magically healed, regardless of
whether it's physical or mental. So if you cast a spell with a force
above your Magic rating and flub your drain roll, you can conceivably be
stuck with a fair amount of physical damage. And given how slowly
physical damage heals naturally, this should pretty much be a last ditch
affair.

Is this some MITS rule? I've seen this as a house rule, but...

It should be in SR3 in the healing/recovery section.
