It's boxes and yes, you can't try again until the character has been damaged
again. I've often suggested that if the healing doesn't go as well as you
would like, then why not cut yourself for a light wound and try again? :-)

I rarely ever do healing during combat. Most times you need your successes
for the nr of boxes to be healed to reduce a lot of damage. Also being the
only mage in the group means I'm required for other things...

Within our group, healing is done by first aid/bio tech to reduce the wound
level, then magical healing to wrap it up.

I just remembered: We've got a house rule that allows one attempt each
at non-magical and magical healing. From memory the SRII rules only
allow one form of healing attempt.

Is this a house rule? 'Cause by the rules (i know, those pesky rules
again...) magical healing may not be attempted once conventional healing
has taken place. So if you get bioteched before your mage gets around to
healing you, your S.O.L.

Yes, it's a house rule. I realised this just after I sent it out to the list.
I did post a follow up message mentioning this. It seemed stupid to our group
that magic couldn't work after biotech had taken place.

I usually rule that Healing can only Heal those wounds you have
recently sustained. So if you take a Serious, heal it down to Moderate,
and then decide you want to try again by cutting yourself Light-ly, I'd
only let the Heal/Treat work on the Light.
After all, the magic is *supposed* to draw on earth
magic/whatever to cause your healing process to accelerate, and I do it
by the Wound. Once it's treated, its treated and only time or a good
doctor can speed the process.
You can do with it how you see fit.
