Heh, I was cleaning out some old mail (don't ask why this one was still
around, I have no idea myself). In any case, the usual monthly argument
about Dikote had come up and the following question was asked, with my
rather amusing reply.

Why am I sharing this? Why not. It's summer and we have nothing better
to do :)

humanoid?

Yep. Take a vat of rubber cement. Measure how much you have (Call this
number R1). Dip one humanoid into the vat and take them back out. Measure
how much rubber cement is left in the vat (Call this number R2).

Pour an amount equal to R1 - R2 into a bucket. Pour the amount from the
bucket onto a flat surface, like a floor or something. Allow to . . . uh
. . . solidify I guess.

Then, cut this sheet of rubber into 1" x 1" squares. Count the number of
squares.

This will give you the surface area of that humanoid (or a rough
guesstament). To get the average area, you will have to perform this
experiment on several humanoids.

Any volunteers?

Well, at least Burning Bright answered the question on powdered armor
(remember when we talked of grinding up people and throwing it in the air
to block Astral, etc.). It works. Tyler says that he cannot move
astrally through once living wood. *grin* Same as once living people.
Now if yer sick enough to do this....well.

Well, if you wish to get real picky, then doesn't any plastic count as "once
living wood"? It was once plant material, so therefore I cannot move through
anything plastic.

Actually no, because it has been severly processed to get to that point,
and is considered non-living and technology,

Well, how 'bout a big tank of crude oil? It's not proccessed at all.

Now, if an astral being is unable to move through once living wood, that
makes many buildings inpenetrable, sinse they have wood in their structures.
It also negates the need to grow ivy around your house to shield it from
astral instrusion, just board up the windows with planks, and close your
wooden door...

Not very likely (in response to buildings of wood)
since most places cannot afford wood. The commonest
thing is to have a synth version of it.
I'm assuming, also, that most structures don't have
wooden cores, due to astral mages/shaman dancing through
so many buildings in the books.
An interesting thought, putting shutters on your windows.
Should work. *grin* Imagine a mage having it shut in his
face....*grin*. Seen to many cartoons as a child.

Actually it is, the ground is drilled into to get the oil - then it is sucked
up out of the ground by machines to be put in large tanks or whatever. then it
is drained by machines from these into other tanks where-in it is ship to
different places.

There is a lot of this process where the oil is proccessed by machines - during
this time is would loose more and more of its mana. Probably by the time it got
anywhere - it would be processed material.

Remember - that this "once Living Wood" only includes unprocessed wood.
Most wood for boards and homes is cut down by machine, debarked by machine,
sliced up by machine, formed into the correct dimensions by machine, then it is
taken by machine and put into a pressure tank where it is subjected to
pressurized treatment of preserving materials, then it is coated with more
preserver. After that it either goes out as lumber or it will be cut again by
machine and then nailed by machines to other boards to make furniture, and
finally it will be stained.

Trust me - most boards ANYWHERE will not interfere with astral travel.

To interfere with Astral travel you would have to keep the wood as virgin as
normal, that means YOU cut the tree by hand (probaly not even chain saws), then
you cut and debark it. Then you lovingly form it into the shape you desire and
then use natural stains to make is look pretty. If you don't do this - it
probably won't be virgin.

basically - to get an idea if something will block astral travel - determine if
it would still be useful as a virgin talisman (Grimore II).

Yes - if you do things correctly - you can make a care that will be impervious
to astral travel - it just takes LOTS and LOTS of work.

Well, it's old enough to not count as living anymore... :)

But, don't most buildings use mostly steel in construction, TODAY? What
about 60 years in the future? Plus, aren't doors to buildings, esp.
apartment buildings glass? Now, the door to the apartment itself maybe
wood, or plazsteel...

Anywho, my .02 nuyen.

Well, I definitely see your point.

Heh, that would make the bacteria you grow in you laboratory more processed
than the crude oil... :-)
