Hah! So "Baron Todbringer" (Warhammer Fantasy) is
actually "Baron Deathbringer"! Cool. :)

Thanks, Barbie.

Probably my last post on the matter. :) Internet
translators are all well and good, but I've already
used one of those for a bunch of languages (speaking
of which, I noticed that Rat is Serbian for war - if
there's anyone out there who speaks Serbian, I'd
appreciate a full translation of my name :) ). I'd
prefer to get data from actual "students" of the
languages.

Oh, and most importantly, I'd really appreciate Latin translations.

And finally, Rand Ratinac expressed himself by writing:

<snip>

> a) Hell
> b) night

in latin (directly from my dictionary):

a)
b) nox*
c) niger, noctu ("at night")
d) bellum
e)
f) mors*, mortuus as "being dead", nex as "murder"
g)

(*= also means "Goddess of x"

and apocalypse could also mean "Weltuntergang" in
german. I'll post the missing words this evening, as I
only have my latin-german dictionary with me and I don't
feel like reading the whole book for three words.

Well, I don`t know of Zahn meaning anything in Norwegian, but
"dunkel" is also the German word for "dark", and "zahn" is
the German
word for "tooth".

Dunkelzahn = Darktooth.

Zahn would be 'tann' in Norwegian. Same word, different spelling.

Well, methinks Gurth's just waiting for a fellow Dutchman to do this
'un, just so he can disagree. That, or he discreetly decided to reply to
Rand in private, which is what we all should've done in the first place,
but then: I love full mailboxes ;).

English - Dutch

a) Hell - Hel
b) night - nacht
c) dark - donker, duister
d) war - oorlog
e) apocalypse - apocalyps
f) death - dood
g) hellfire - hellevuur

depravity - verderf (often used in conjunction with 'dood', i.e: "dood
en verderf zullen de aarde treffen" [death and depravity shall strike
the earth]).

Latin bits:

inferne - on the lower side, below.... can be used for Hell... [infernus
is an also-correct more spooky-sounding version of the word]

"apocalyps" in latin actually translates to "a notice sent to a higher
tribunal"..... in a biblical context it does mean the good ol' judgement
day happening. "dies judicium" (uncertain about the declinations :)
could conceivably translate to judgement day, if you need an
alternative, though.

diabolus - your average devil
mortalis - mortal.
morbus - sickness, disease, illness.
occidio - slaughter, massacre.

Hey, lookie... all the basic ingredients for the sentence "In the year
2062 the devils from below shall cause disease amongst mortals,
slaughtering many" which ought to sound extremely impressive in Latin
(in stark contrast to the English version)... too bad I don't possess
the mad phat skillz required to make a proper translation. Anyone?

Once this list of all the different languages is put
together, are there plans to post it someplace?
Personally I got a D or F in every secondary language
I took in school, so sorry that I can't add anything.
But I am interested in the compiled list when its
done. =)

Since most modern languages have been covered more than adequately,
I will put in my morsel in one modern and two ancient languages:

Modern Greek:

a) Hell kolasi (KO-la-see)
b) night nikta (NEE-cta)
c) dark Skotathi (sko-TA-thee , th pronounced as in the=article)
d) war polemos (PO-le-mos)
e) apocalypse Apokalipsi (a-po-KA-lee-psee)
f) death Thanatos (THA-na-tos, th pronounced as in thorough)
g) hellfire fotia tis kolasis (fo-tee-A TEES KO-la-sees)

Ancient Greek:

a) Hell Adis (Hades), kolasis (hell), Kathartirio (purgatory)
b) night Nyx
c) dark Skotos
d) war polemos
e) apocalypse Apocalypsis
f) death Thani, Thanatos
g) hellfire Kolastirio pir (hellfire) Kathartirio pir (purgatory fire)

Latin (full translation)
a) Hell Infernus, Infernum (only in medieval pig latin)
b) night Nox
c) dark Tenebrae, obscurus,a,um
d) war Bellum, dimicatio
e) apocalypse Apocalypsis (use of latinized greek word by medieval
christian writers and translators)
As there was no such concept in the Latin religion the relevant phrases
would be :
- Revelatio (revelation=apokalypse)
- Ultimae dies (the last days as the Romans would put it, more freely:
end of days)

f) death Mors
g) hellfire Ignis infernalis, but most usual in plural ignes infernales
(always in medieval pig latin)

As I don't have a dictionary at hand, I can't remember any more right
now, but if you are interested in specific composing of original
texts(no more than two pages please), translation or else, you can state
your querry and I can try to be of service. If it is a specific rpgame
'ritual' than you want your players to experience, you can e-mail me the
english text and I will be more than happy to translate it for you. That
goes for every one else.

The Wiz

PS: btw why don't you ask barbie to tell you what your name means in
German?

Dunkel? What does Zahn mean, if anyhing?

James

Old Dunky ate too many elves and not enough wholesome humans, and he never
brushed his teeth. The other dragons can be so cruel with their nicknames.

'neco' is more appropriate for infliction of death by disease, whereas
'occido' is more direct as it consists of
ob+caedo=over+cut=significantly direct cause of death. And if I
remember the word correctly, 'clades' is a more appropriate word for
large scale massacre instead of occidio which is use for precise or
individual murders

anno bismillesimmosexagessimosecundo (2062) domestici infernales ex
purgatorio aeterno gravisimmes morbes hominorum societati profligabunt
multosque horrendisima morte necabunt.

At the two thousandth and sixtieth second year the infernal denizens
from the eternal purgatory shall inflict the gravest of diseases to the
society of humans and many shall they kill with the most horrible of
deaths.

Any more ingredients (or not) and I can make you some Latin sounding
passage for your rpg apocalypse.
Please don't go ballistic on the terminology as I will not have access
to a dictionary until friday when i visit my father (and he would not
appreciate my making research for 'those horrible games').

In Korean:

(n.b.-- "eo" is pronounced like "uh." Pretty much. And "u"
is "oo," not
"uh." Oh, and "eu" is... sort of like "u" through clenched
teeth)

> a) Hell
chi-ok
> b) night
bahm, cheonyeok (evening, mostly)
> c) dark
eo-du-un (adj.), eo-dum (n.-- darkness)

cheonjaeng

Can't say anything with certainty, but kyeshi is the Revelation and I think
kyeshirok would be the Book of Revelations.
> f) death
chukeum, samang. It's also worth noting that the "sa" in samang is the
Chinese character for death, which sounds exactly like the number 4 in
Korean (and also some other Asian languages, I think). That's why 4 is an
unlucky number in a lot of Asia (and why Australian taxis with numbers like
444-4444 don't do so hot among immigrant populations :) ). In fact, in some
buildings there is no fourth floor, just like some Western buildings are
missing the 13th floor.
> g) hellfire
uh... chiok-ui bul.

I wish I could help you out more with Chinese characters used in Korean,
since that's where things get fun. :)

Here's one in french that seems to have been missed (sorry if I'm wrong
about that), and which is a personal favorite of mine, for whatever bizarre
reason...

tenebres (fem pl) - night, also means gloom, darkness

It's got a coupla accents on it, so that it is pronounced tay-neh-bruhs
(iirc - it's been a while since I've actually spoken French)

According to Jan Jaap van Poelgeest aka ne, at 23:03 on 24 Apr 00, the
word on the street was...

No, he sent it <hint>off-list</hint>, like he was hoping <hint>everyone
else would do, too</hint>...

The thing is, all this is highly OT, unless Doc' somehow needs this for an
SR-related topic he's going to post about around now... And better:
everyone here should have easily spotted this as an OT thread, with which
replies are best directed to the mailbox of the person asking the question
rather than to the list.

Nope. :)

Well, it's for a character. But that's all I'm going
to say. :)

Thanks VERY much, Manolis. I'm only interested in the
individual words, though, and you've covered that
quite nicely.

> PS: btw why don't you ask barbie to tell you what
your name means in German?

Because the name is Serbian. :) I suppose the
translation could be similar, but I was hoping for an
accurate Serbian to English translation. For instance,
krieg is war in German, while rat is war in Serbian -
and my name ain't Krieginac. :)
