Actually, the Path Magic of Tir na nOg is similar to this, especially the
Path of the Bard, as they have access to both Elementals and Spirits of
the Great Fiery Firmament. Overall, the Path Magic combines a number of
elements from both the Hermetic and Shamanic traditions. While it is
officially Hermetic, mages identify with particular a Path and gain
bonuses and penalties based on this affiliation. Followers hear a
'calling' of a Path in a fashion similar to the calling of a totem, and in
some regards, the direction followed could be looked at as a totem.

Given this information, I would not doubt that there are others who view
magic in a similar way. I hardly feel it is unrealistic to allow other
types of Hermetic-Shamanic mixtures with differing results.
