I am also going to insert the "the following is mostly IMO" thing as well...

Now, to the "serious" side of things. Your ideas are interesting and quite
usable, especially in light of the fact that they are being used now in
current SR. "Higher Astral" could easily mean the Metaplanes, where the
"magic is stronger" and in a more pure form. A variation on a theme is that
the "Quests of Metamagic" are not all thought out.

Fox, this is interesting, because I've been considering something here in
Lafalot along a similar idea.

New Skill : Metamagic, with concentrations being each of the known
"Metamagical Talents" in SR (Quickening, Shielding, Anchoring, Masking,
Dispelling, Centering, etcera..).

Metamagic is the "direct" (oh what a term) usage of Metaplanar forces. The
reason why I am considering making it a seperate skill, is that even I believe
that "Sorcery" is just a bit too broad a catch-all. Granted, only someone
with access to the Metaplanes (meaning Astral Projection for Initiates or
Astral Gateway for Free Spirits) can learn the skill, but that doesn't seem
like too great a leap of consideration. Mike and I are working this, and will
be putting it up on the "Thaumaturgy" side of the Web Pages...(damn, so much
to do, so little time)

I've considered the "Threads" of energy concept from ED, and believe it is
simply not completely compatible with SR, without changing the mechanics of
the dice rolls themselves. However, the number of "threads" and the "Grade
of
Initiation" could easily be compatible, if just on a slightly different
method. We've been using two additional metamagical "talents" for a while
now, "Channeling" and "Threading" (the latter having only a little bit
in
comparison with the ED terminology btw). Even these new talents of ours do
not go beyond the boundaries of the given game mechanics, even if they are
just "seemingly powerful".

But this is Metamagic we're talking about, of course it's powerful...
