Does anyone know the basis of HMHVV or is it just explained as Magic? If
there is a technical side to it, what is the medical/chemical, composite of
the virus?

I've always wondered about this myself also. I am wagering a guess here
but HMVV might be an astrally active virus that needs essense. Its
parasitic nature probably is the cause of its host's transformation.
Evolutionally speaking it's disadvantageous for viruses to outrightly kill
their hosts. Therefore the virus keeps its host alive forever absorbing
essence.

About structure I'd guess that it would look crystalline like
any other virus.

Everyone knows that there is no known cure for the HMVV but if Shadowrun
technology ever makes nanites and if some mages develop sterilize further
they could... oh well.

You tell me,

Dust

<whispers back> well no **** <yelling> sherlock, its not real. I'm talking
game terms. You're no help. I wasn't sure if had been explained somewhere in
a book I hadn't read(which is most of them). I fugured everything else
science ficticious in this GAME had an explanation, why not this? Thank You.

Like the DNA encoding for magical aptitude it is something that =
only operates in a magic background (requires magic to express =
itself) that currently lies beyond the current scope of medical =
knowledge for detailed explanation. Unlike the potential for magical =
aptitude the HMHVV can be identified and even subclassified. The =
research is still very incomplete as we can veiw the recent progress =
made on the origin and nature of ghouls as proof of a still =
developing understanding of the 6th world. For that matter Meta-human =
varients have only recently been recognized from the more common =
meta-human population which are far more common than the victims of =
HMHVV.

If you're looking for some sort of semi-plausible explanation for how
HMHVV works on the cellular level, the best I could guess at is that the
virus is a phage/retrovirus of some varity which contains certain
'awakened' genes. THe virus itself isn't particularly infectious -- uner
normal circumstances, the human immune system doesn't have trouble
beating it into submission. When the body is effectively dead (drained of
Essence), the virus has a chance to infect and spread through the
(mostly) dead body. With the immune system effectively dead at this
point, the virus spreads rapidly and makes its changes to the body's DNA.
These changes are soon activated by the high mana level of the
surrounding environment and !voila! a vampire is 'born'.

The virus is a parasite, a symbiote at best.
