I was GMing a game of AD&D, and the two PCs (human cleric & elven
bladesinger)had just arrived in an apparently abandoned village just
after sunset. It was storming, and all of the dirt roads had turned to
mud. The cleric went to investigate the temple, while the bladesinger
went to find someone at the Inn. As far as the PCs could tell, the
whole village was empty. Well, the cleric was looking about near the
back of the temple and spotted a huge pit, about 15' in diameter and
about 15 feet deep. All of a sudden, several undead began to rise from
the ground near the cleric. He shouts for the bladesinger and attempts
to turn the creatures. Failing miserably, he activates his ring of
levitation and begins to attack the undead from above with his magical
mace. The bladesinger barely hears his friend's cry. He draws his
SWORD OF SHARPNESS and takes off running in his BOOTS OF SPEED along the
MUDDY ROADS. Can anyone see where this is heading? Needless to say, he
saw his buddy and the undead, but, was unable to stop. Picture if you
will an elf brandishing a razor sharp sword barrelling across a muddy
road at about 40 mph. He tried to stop...and failed. So he
fell......and slid.......though the mud......into the group of
undead..........and finally.....into the pit. The cleric would have
helped, but his player fell out of his chair, he was laughing so hard.
The lesson: never run through the mud with boots of speed while waving
around a sharp object.
