Have you read Snow Crash? I think this is a pretty similar concept, not
entirely the same, but it comes close...

It certainly sounds interesting, but I think you have to explain it to the
players beforehand to avoid the otherwise unavoidable screams of "Where
does it say that?!?!" coming from those same players...

Certainly. But part of the provence of GM is the ability to spring a
totally new trap that most players do not expect.

Neal Stephenson; my copy has ISBN 0-14-023021-1 on the back. It's about
someone poisoning people using something that looks like static does on a
tv screen.
