This is slightly embarassing, what with me claiming to be the difinitive
master on subjects magickal (yeah, Riiiight! :) but I seem to have come up
with a problem.

Here goes:
I'm trying to develop a new spell, (ut oh) and have run into a few
undocumented features of SR's magic system. What I'm trying to do is
create a combat spell that I've named Mage Sword.

Mage Sword
Damaging Manipulation
Damage: S Range: Touch Drain: (Force/2+1)S
Type: Mana Duration: Sustained

Special effects: Gives caster Reach +1.

This spell does physical damage and was created using the Grim II.
Only one success neccessary to activate, extra successes stage damage up.
I gave it the touch requirement because I wanted a spell that would use
the mage's combat skills to hit, and made it mana so that it could be
used in astral space (which will be it's primary use). So here are the
questions:

1) Can it be used against another spell? Specifically, can I use
it against a barrier created by a spell? Will I be able to use
it to 'block' a spell in astral space?

2) Can I use it in attacking a barrier from some other source
(medicine lodge, wards, active hermetic circle, etc. )

3) What effect will it have on focuses of any type. (Directly on
the focus, I'm not trying to ground here. I want to know if
it would do damage to the focus/sever the bond/nothing/something
else...)

My GM and I are currently working on this, but I thought that I would
throw this out to the general public, and see what you think.

Any comments will be welcome, flames will be met by a water elemental.
A copy of the method used to derive the spell (so far) is available on
request, and a final copy (when done) can be supplied to any who want it.

And for the Marvelites out there, YES, I am trying to create Illyana's
Soulsword. :)
