Well, as I'm not such an unearthy being, I don't know if I could answert this,
but I'll try ;)

I would agree with you, that you establish the astral link with the target,
after you "weaving" the spell - at the end of the castig process and so you
would suffer drain.
I should try it next time with the mage in my group, just to see his face when
the "real" enemy don't plop away as the illusions did :)
