It's one that's been over on this side of the pond for as long as I can
remember... And my parents told me about it, so it's been around for well
over 50 years here.

Huh. Never heard that (and I am well acquainted with local April 1st
conventions :))but I don't know if this intense pranking is merely my
area, or most of the US.

Not everywhere, though - my family are British, and we've never heard of
anything like this...
