Just finished reading the new White Wolf sourcebook for Mage: The Sorcerors
Crusade called Infernalism: The Path of Screams. All I can say is that this
is what all RPG sourcebooks should be like.

While it deals specifically with being a black mage, the material is so good
I can recommend it as a excellent source of ideas and background for toxic
and insect shamans. Why would one twist himself into something nonhuman and
deal with spirits of malice and destruction? This book can tell you.

I'm not a huge fan of White Wolf overall but this book should be on any
gamemasters shelf that wants to flesh out the motivations of their
adversaries...If you like the concept of toxic shamans this book is
especially useful...

Is there anything else out there on the web that deals with this sort
of thing as it relates to SR? I've always been curious about the
motivations of Insect Shamans in particular.

I don't think so. Evil guys tend to be cardboard cutout villains, especially
ALIEN evil guys, even in Shadowrun.

Or as they say in the book:
"Stand 'em up, knock 'em down! "Here comes my Dark Lord! Booga! Booga!
Booga!" "No you don't! Taste my steel!" SPLAT!! End of story."

Replace Dark Lord with "toxic spirit" or "insect queen" and there you
have
the typical encounter with an insect or toxic shaman.

Shadowrun is pretty good about showing moral ambiguity, but falls short when
dealing with the bizarre possiblities the game brings about. Anyone who has
browsed the Deep Resonance forums and seen the threads on dating your ally
spirit knows things are not as simple as they may appear...

So far this is one of the few books in any genre that talks about the
MOTIVATIONS such characters could have, from revenge to sympathy for the
devil. The Merits and Flaws from the book would make GREAT Edges and Flaws
for characters who traffic in such things or for fleshing out NPCs.

The Mage specific rules are very rules-light and adaptable if you so desire,
the personages detailed could be changed a little and become a part of any
ongoing game. Between this and The Maleficium (out of print Infernal
sourcebook for Ars Magica) you could be on to something very interesting...

Toxic shamans used to be a big deal...now you never hear about them..insect
shamans? Oh yeah they are just dupes to be used and abused. Booga booga
booga.
