I don't have the grimything, so I wonder if somone out there can please
explain to me what the f**k initiates are. Cause it sounds like the AD&D
levels systems, but i sure hope it's even close.

Well, you know how mages in SR II are karma black holes? Wellllll, they just
(well not quite just, they've been this way for a while) become a whole lot
worse - The Grimything (which means "The Grimoire") turns them into massive
karma sponges with an insatiable appetite for more and more and more karma.
An initiate is a more powerful and more experienced magician. And, yes, they
do run on a sort of a level system, as in you have your level 1 initiates,
your level 2 initiates, and you level 15 initiates (who kick PCs butts :-)).
But it is no where near the same as $$&$. There are only limited bonuses for
increasing in initiation level, a level 0 initiate (the lowest) still has
access to every metamagical power that a level 5 or 6 initiate has. It's
just that the level (actually, it's called grade I think) 6 initiate can do
some of them better (not to mention that they can probably do just about
everything else better too). Initiates, besides gaining the metamagical
abilites (such as centering - to reduce T#s, quickening - to make sustained
spells permanent, sheilding - which is super effective spell defence, and a
few more things too), also gain access to higher levels of astral space that
are beyond the reach of a regular magician. they also get special bonuses
around here and there in the system too, like they can add their grade to
their astral inititive. Oh, and I forgot one of the most important
advantages of getting initiated, you get to add you grade to you magic
attribute, so you can toss that killer hellblast and not take physical drain!
