Could anyone out there help me out? I decided to make a new character; a
snowboarder. How would I go by acquiring appropriate skills, and what
would a 2060 snowboard look like, run like, and cost? Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey, all,

I'm new to the list, but I'll take a shot at nocturnal's question:'

>>Could anyone out there help me out? I decided to make a new character; a
snowboarder. How would I go by acquiring appropriate skills, and what
would a 2060 snowboard look like, run like, and cost? <<

Make snowboarding a reaction based skill (action skill for 3rd ed), and add
alpine skiing as a possible second. May have parachuting as well (people into
this kind of stuff tend to be adrenalin junkies, and would have several skills
that most consider "dangerous.") His combat skills would probably be fairly
low, except, maybe unarmed combat/ martial arts.

A 2060 snowboard would, perhaps, be a little thinner, to improve speed, and a
littl different shaped for optimum handling and steering. Its materials will
probably change drastically as the technologies applicable to 'boarding grow.
I'd give it a flat cost of 150 Yen for a bottom line board and up from there.

Hope that helps

Same as any other vehicle skill. I'd agree with this.

Now that all depends on whether or not he's a snowtrooper or just a
snowboarder.

Okay, here's an idea to get the brains churning.

How about snowboards (and skis) built with smart materials?

*Doc' coasts down the mountain as his smart snowboard steers him around
all the obstacles...or something like that...*

Doc,

I hadn't thought of that. Or the magical equivalent, an adept who's skills
are focused on snowboarding. As for the smart boards, they might be a little
risky, depending on how long they had been in use. The boards might be able
to take a really sharp angle, but will the boarder's knees and ankles do as
well?

I dunno. I might make it a Quickness-based skill with an Athletics
default. It's not really like piloting a vehicle, you know.

Well, you'd need to build in a power supply, sensors, and a microprocessor
to compute and implement the changes in the materials. I'm not saying it
couldn't be done, but it'd be pricey.

Of course, this reminds me of the sport I invented for SR: Turbosurfing!
Imagine surfboards with inboard impellers and optional rigger interfaces.
Of course, my grand-champion unlimited-class turbosurfer was a Hawai'ian
Dolphin shaman known as... The Big Kahuna. Made up for the lack of a VCR
by using sea spirits on his rides.

True - but it doesn't matter how fast you can run/move - you have to be
able to REACT fast in order to snowboard well, don't you? Reflexes,
chummer. Athletics default...hmmm...yeah, all right.

Jeez, you think that'd matter to a hardcore snowboarder? It's the toys,
man, the toys. Same as a street sammie shelling out for move-by-wire
because it's just so much COOLER than wired reflexes.

My bad, I thought the athletic-type skills were Quickness-based, but I just
checked. They're BODY-based; go figure. Anyway, snowboarding seems to
fall more naturally into that catagory than into the catagory of vehicle
control. After all, I doubt you've ever exerted yourself driving a car the
way you would when boarding, even if you're equally adept at both.

No, I don't think it'd matter. I'm just saying that the prospective
bleeding-edge snowboarder should be prepared to ramp up his Resources
rating. :) I can see it now: "Dammit, Johnnie, you've GOTTA get me more
work! I'm still 5K short for the new Yamaha YX-20 Windshear smartboard,
and that doesn't count getting to Denver! The season starts in TWO WEEKS,
man!"

Like Machiavelli said, if you've gotta choose between fear and love, choose
fear; it's more reliable. :)

Though I've never snowboarded, I'd say you need a skill for it, which you
could either take as a separate skill, or as a specialization of Athletics
(your decision, based on how you see the skill). Probably Quickness-based,
or perhaps Reaction. Using this skill would probably be an open test if
you're trying to impress people, or against a TN of about 4 or 6 for
normal snowboarding maneuvers during combat situations (avoiding a tree,
for example, or landing right side up after a jump).

Also some knowledge skills related to the subject, like Famous
Snowboarders or Best Places To Snowboard would be helpful.

Costs etc. I have no idea of, but a good rule of thumb is one current US$
to one nuyen.

Boarding
This skill governs the use of a board with either wheels or a flat surface to
travel over ground or roads.

Default Attribute : Quickness
Default Skill : Athletics
Type of Skill : Active
Specializations : By Terrain type (snow, paved surfaces, forest type terrain)

You could even use this skill for using a Hoverboard, which can be found on
the soon to be deceased Hoosier Hacker House Junior (it is being incorporated
into HHH).

The add is members.aol.com/hhhad2/intro.htm or .html. From there follow the
link to the Vehicles page, and then go to aircraft.

-=-=-=-

As for what a 2060 Snowboard look like? Probably a little more streamlined
than the ones we have today, but otherwise not much change. As for cost, find
someplace online, see what they are charging, then use the price in dollars as
if it were the price in nuyen.

Disclaimer

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away. The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
